nice job andrew sheet tucked away nicely . if you strapped load underneath the sheet you did not need rope as the sheet looks pretty tight to me good job regerds gazzap
hiya,
Nice job Andrewv8, but obviously something up front needing kept dry why not sheet the whole lot to stop possible rain running along the trailer and wetting the stuff mean’t to be kept dry, sorry i am a nit picking old git but it’s the way i would have done it, oh where’s my tautliner then again i would’nt know how to get into one, help.
thanks harry long retired.
Hello Harry, there was 3 boxes on the front that had to be kept dry. Didnt matter about the steel getting wet on the back. not too bad I thought for an ex tipper driver…
this was a awkward i did. a simalutor worth £4 millon pound .i could not strap over the top only through bottom of the pallets. they also wanted it sheeted from the bottom up. as you can see i did’nt regards gazzap

i do i am forty and got taught when i was ten by my old man . he worked for greenwoods [southampton depot] doing zanussi white goods those yellow all one peice sheets were bloody heavy
regards gazzapSame as me mucker , got taught by ole` man as well bout same age (now 44 ) as he didnt think it would be any different when i started driving
how wrong he was. would go back to his era anyday
We all laughed at your Dad’s roping and sheeting tricks Tony
It would be him saying “Give us a hand mucker and we’ll get this sheeted in no time”
We would climb up and start and he’d say “I have to get something, back in a minute” and dissapear, he would return when we had finished … we all loved your old Dad
With ref to Paper mills … we would haul reels of paper at about 2 or 3 tons a piece out of a mill in Yorkshire. On nights we would run up to Wakefied depot where sometimes a driver had pulled a fatbed loaded with the reels fro the mill for us and we just did a change over. We would usually find our trailer under the large canopy and facing down a slight slope, already sheeted etc but I would always check every load with care.
One night I arrived to find such a load under the canopy all sheeted and roped “Just leave some rope in exchange” said the foreman.
“No chance” I said and started to strip the lot off to check and it was just as well After stripping the back end I found there was no backsotch to secure it from rolling, just crossed ropes
Could you imagine how many people could have been killed if that lot came off on the M18 or M1 ?
Not long after starting a Durhams of Teeside i was told to go to a nearby foundry to load a slab of steel and bring it back to the yard. I said i don’t have any chains for that and the office said just use a sheet and ropes like everyone else.
Later when i drove back in with my ‘regular’ sheet folded neatly over the slab and plenty of ropes on it the yard foreman comes over, here i am thinking i’m going to get a pat on the back when he stands there and chews my arse out
for trying to put holes in the sheet where the ropes are on the edges
After i said i did what the office told me he explained about a ‘steel’ sheet being used so the ropes wont get cut on the edges of the slab, just one of my many ‘learning’ experiences

Bewick Transport had some of the finest shunters in the buisness at roping and sheeting !! But we had two drivers( they know who they are !) who I now believe suffered from ( I dont know the exact wording ) what some of these housewives suffer from !! These two would loosen all the ropes and ties on an immaculate done trailer and re-do it to their satisfaction and believe me it wasn’t to get an hours overtime!Iv’e seen them get ■■■■■■ through when you wouldn’t ask a dog to work but these two were obsessed !!! Cheers Bewick.

Pat…What are you suggesting
That the old man was a lazy f***er
… Is that why he took me to work on a saturday - to wash his lorry
Like many of you, i was taught how to rope and sheet by my old dad back in the 70s.Dad used to load paper reels and just about anything else on a flat trailer back then. Steel coils, fruit, timber and waste paper bales were regular cargos and all had to be fully sheeted.
I started in the late 80s and used to sub for George Hammonds in Sittingbourne, again a traditional general haulier with many flat trailers.Although i was never as good at roping & sheeting as my old man, i always gave it my best shot, and was allways very pleased with myself when i got it spot on!.

The very last time I saw your Dad it was in a layby near Swindon and he was driving a Mothercare lorry with you following, he got out of his cab and shook my hand … he said “How are you keeping me old mucker ? … who are you anyway ? I cant tell without me glasses”
I remember stopping him driving out the yard with my lorry … “Sorry Mucker” he said “I couldnt tell, iy’s the same colour as mine”

DRIVERS THAT CAN SHEET WELL NOTICE OTHERS THAT CAN TOO !
Hi Mike P, is that the same Stuart Kelly as ran the sheeting and roping classes out of Croppers of Kendal ?
I loaded out of Farleys at Kendal one day (bags of milk powder on pallets) and stopped in Kendal market place for a cold drink as I set off for home (York). When I came out of the shop Stuart was walking a class around my motor examining the R&S job. I think I was given 8 out of 10 for my efforts. I’ve got some shots of it but I’ll be buggered if I can get them onto here, and thats a fact !
regards doublereduction.

Hiya Mike Glad to here you remember the Bewick fleet !! But oh dear what B****t did Kelly fill you up with ? No he was never one of Bewicks lads nor would he ever have been !! I believe he did Ft about with sheeting and roping courses when all the main operators around South ■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Lancs were piling into Curtainsiders !! and no we never let him or his bunch of idiots near our depot to practice although I do believe he did “employ” one or two of our lads at a weekend and one in particular if I recall correctly worked nights for us and never got involved in sheeting or roping much !! To sum up Mr. Kelly’s chances of getting a start at Bewick Tpt I would rate them as somewhere between nil & non !!As regards roping and sheeting Kelly and his merry bunch of men couldn’t hold a candle to the Bewick shunters !! Didn’t you get to know any of the Bewick drivers they really were a fine set of lads its a pity you only have got to know one of Nelsons mediocre drivers Tut Tut Michael !! Cheers Bewick.
hiya,
Picked a loaded trailer up at Hull Brs when on for the Brs at another depot, the load, it was only headboard height but had a bright orange flourescent fly sheet over the full length of the trailer and it was in the mirror line, the sheet was brand new and really bright, i can tell you my eyes was sore and that was only after a few miles had to stop and put my own flysheet over it, it was really affecting my vision.
thanks harry long retired.
For those who dont know… Get practicing
