Hiya,
With few exceptions ie’ a bit of tanker, tipper abnormal indivisable and tilt work
the rest of my “career” was spent as a rope and sheet man never progressing to
new fangled curtainsiders, why mention, in all my time I never once had a goods
damp or damaged signature, and no Dennis in all that time the rain didn’t hold
off for me, I considered I was doing a proper job, one failing I could never find
the vehicle wash, but if I had I doubt the motor would have run any better.
thanks harry, long retired.
Now then “H” I can liken your comments to the difference between a copper sheathed schooner that had no barnacles on it’s bottom and a wooden bottomed one covered in them ! I’m sure your motor would have slipped through the air easier if it was washed and clean than one covered in ■■■■■ an inch deep ! Cheers Dennis.

Having said this Dennis I know Harry, He is a very clean smart turned out fellow, I new some divers in the old days who didn’t even get washed themselves let alone washing their wagon, One person I worked with used to carry a towel a bar of soap & a razor wrapped up in a newspaper when he left on a Sunday No clean clothes at all, He was away sometimes 3 nights, I used to give him a wide berth I may tell you, He smelled awfull in fact it was a standing joke when he went into a transport café their clocks stopped,
Regards Larry.

Hiya,
Dennis, nothing ever arrived in my work ducket proving or disproving that fact
and although you could eat your bait off the bonnet and I did like a clean shed
interior, I was never turned away from either collection or delivery point cos a
cart was mucky, I always said I was the driver not a valeter and I usually saw
the yard man with his hands in his pockets it would shorten his day if he had a
motor or two to wash after all I was the one making the pound notes to fill his
wage packet. he was a non- combatant

I would have just kept him on “The 80” until he learned the error of his ways Larry, then all being well I would have stuck him on a Guy Big J 8LXB, then again he may have fell back into his old ways I suppose, as you well know you can’t teach “an old Dog” new tricks eh! Cheers Dennis.

Hiya,
Yes Dennis very useful when side stepping the Guvnor’s wrath yet again about
having a mucky motor and having more of a preference for the nearby public
house rather than the vehicle wash, I did know where the pub was the wash I
didn’t, well after a hard day pushing one of those old 180 Percy engined Atki’s
about a hard working chap had a need for some refreshment. Eh’

Hello,
I’m sorry to ■■■■ in, but I’d be extremely grateful for some help. I’m writing an alternative history novel, and I’m trying to find out about security measures in the 1970s-1980s period.
Never mind, I got the answers I needed on the thread that originally recommended I come here!

I had one just like it anyway try and put on a tidy load in some of these jute mills when bundles of hessian bags kept hurtling down the shutes in loading docks that were built for horse and cart …it was ok if you were shuttling back to the yard… but if it was on to stay it was sometimes difficult and there was,nt time to stuff around … so to speak ■■ anyway that mercury was well prepared if you check the front bumper ■■? and get a close up of the load on the ERF behind it a mixed but tidy load …where was that cafe by the way ■■?

Hiya,
Larry Dirty Dicks and the Mayfield in those days was a bit near home for me
but if I had to stay out I had relatives who lived in Lancaster but have had
many a cuppa and a sarnie in the Mayfield, like yourself I tried Dicks only
the once, John Smillie’s lads from Govan were very prominent at Mayfield
there was always a handful of them overnighting there I did know quite a
few of Smillie’s lads they used to load me back home from Rolls Royce aero
engines to Preston area according to my Guvnor they paid well and prompt.

Hi all. i am from Ireland and see alot of roping and sheeting daily or every other day in 2017. The leabherr crane factory is on my way to work and the transport company Christy Lucey has to rope and sheet, incoming steel and components leaving so i guess the lads there must be goof at their job. does anyone else still do it daily or even weekly . i know mickeyboy does a bit every now and again from his post.
