Yes master ,when I was dinning in the wheatsheaf on Saturday night they said you come in folding the serviettes !
My secondary career has finally been “blown”
Was this the Wheatsheaf in Beetham Dan’l ? If it was then the last time I was in there was at the wake of one of my old drivers Roy “Bull” Davies and I don’t no whether they still have the corner of the bar “decked out” and called “The Leyland Corner” The “Sheaf” was one of Roy’s “locals” and he had driven a Leyland Beaver artic at Brady’s in the 60’s ! His other “locals” were the Kings Arms at Hale on the A6 and the Fighting ■■■■■ in Arnside, but he also frequented the WMC at Endmoor on the A 65 where I used to meet him occasionally but he only kept his membership up at this Club so he could get his CIU card here so he could visit the many WMC’s up and down the UK on his nights away in the motor. Cheers Dennis.
It was Beetham ,we were returning from Campbeltown,Tebay was shut ,crooklands was packed ,milnthorpe pub on the lights didn’t look up to much ,so wheatsheaf it was .
I agree Well done Alistair proper job

Oily
I followed one of these on the a82 out of Inverness on a saturday morning last year.
It was a low loader with a forklift and plant on board, driving faster then i would have.
A few bad bends and tight for 2 lorries to pass in places.
I turned off at invermoriston.
They are always at Ullapool waiting for the Stornaway ferry. Also have a few rigids with hiab.
Hiya,
Unusual to see winding handle on the offside in the UK Dennis must have employed Johnnie foreigner.
thanks harry, long retired.
Here’s some I’ve done over the last few months, ive read nearly every page of this thread hoping to see someone had spotted me. No luck there so I’ll hope the photos upload (not great with technology, I’m a 32 year old dinosaur)
No doubt there’s bits people would do differently but I can assure you I try my best!

Well spotted “H” all I can think of it had a new leg fitted on the O/S which was a “winding one” but IIRC we didn’t do it and for what it was worth I got rid of this trailer after a few months when our new batch of C/F’s started to arrive from Oldham . Cheers Dennis.

Hi “Leyland600”, That’s a lot of miles to do in a oner, But of course in those good old days we just took the job as it came & got on with it, This Leyland Comet with a good driver would cope with this sort of task no bother IMO, & The fish would still be fresh being packed in ice when it was off loaded, How things have changed, Fish hauled today in Reefers or Freezers must be a doddle to what it was in the old days, I hauled Spratts on a artic tipper from North Shields, Fish Quay in the 70s to Frazerburgh, Grimsby, Hull, Fish meal plants, Seasonal work of course, But it was load & go regardless of hours worked, The haulage rates were tops , & Paid on the dot, I could do it all again
, If I still had my wagons, Regards Larry.
Hi Lawrence, Yes I used to do similar work hauling herring when in season out of Whithaven to Mac Fisheries at Fraserburgh, Tyne Brand at North Shields, Leith and Hull. As you say load and go just be sure you are there for 8.00 am latest that is when leaving Whitehaven about 4.0am after sitting on the dock all night waiting for the boats to come in. I can remember regularly meeting the Lochinver wagons on Stainmoor heading south as I returned loaded from BOCM at Selby back in the mid 1960s. Aye the good old days, Nae tachographs then just elastic log sheets. !!!
Cheers, Leyland 600.
You won’t see any lochinver lorries these days . the foreign boats come into lochinver and unload directly onto french lorries . I hope it changes once we have our own country back ( unless jimmie krankie takes scotland back into the eu )

You have just “jogged” the old memory cell again Gerald as I can recall the time when both RWB (5ton Trader) and later AHB (7 tonner) would be parked on Ireby Square late on loaded with fish from Donnans Whitehaven, obviously they were probably having some supper before setting of to make an early morning delivery as you describe. Did the various hauliers that carried this traffic work direct for the likes of Donnans or would they be subbing off someone else. Distant times long since gone eh! Cheers Dennis.
Hi Dennis, Everyone appeared to work direct with Ricky Donnan. Good rates outbound with fish but poor (3d. per empty box return) which did not amount to a lot on the return journey. 300 boxes @ 3d = 900d = £3-15s (£3.75 today) enough to buy about 16 gallons fuel at 4s-6d per gallon. enough for 210 miles running lightly loaded.
Aye the good old days. Cheers Leyland 600
