Nice photo of Ernest Thorpe’s Sed Atki Pete, they are still going as well.
Makes a change to see one carrying summat else apart from blooms, billets and bars.

Ernest Thorpe renown steel haulier whose yard is adjacent to the A629 Halifax Road in Thurgoland.

They used to run a large fleet of Atkinsons and later Seddon Atkinsons.
Ernest Thorpe Transport Ltd was founded in 1921 by Ernest Thorpe with just one vehicle.
Still run by the family today they now run a fleet of DAF’s.

Another one of Ernest Thorpe’s.

I remember one night late 1968 I had just left Parkway Market Sheffield for a Abbey Wood S.E. trailer change and was on the M1 before the M1/M18 split when I saw a wagon on fire. On closer inspection it was a Thorpes tandem axled trailer on fire on hard shoulder and driver had pulled Atki unit off away from the blazing sheets and tyres. He was sat ont grass bank chucking clods of earth at his tractor playing hell about it’s 150 Gardner -“wouldna pull thi granny off her ■■■■ pot” and “should have been Atki on bloody fire instead of t’trailer”.I had a quick ■■■ with him and left when fire service turned up.

0Didnt H LL Davies used to have a site selling fridge trailers up the A1 - somewhere near Colsterworth? Is it the same company, or my memory playing tricks on me?
Cheers, Keith

Hi Keith,
The only place I know of is at Dunkirk Chester at the end of the M56, they just specialise in trailer sales, Cheer’s Pete

Before Dunkirk he had a sales yard next door to the decent café at the junction of the A49 and the A533 between Northwich & Runcorn.

That cafe is called Tall Trees and I think Shmitz trailers have Hywell Davies old yard now. Could be a tankwash there as well

Thanks, hayday, used to travel that road regularly but haven’t been that way in years.

Morning Hayday and ROF,
I came past that cafe on the traffic lights a couple of weeks ago and the lorry park looks like it has been halved in size? It is a Scmitz dealer in there now.
The Dunkirk site, is that built on the old cafe? Cheer’s Pete

Morning Pete,

Dont recognise the boat haulier chap.

That GINAF would have been a rare beast on UK roads. They were a specialist builder of mainly off road
trucks similar to Terberg.

Heres a couple of there multi axle tippers which they were well known for.

Hi Trevor,Brymbo is a blast from the past.I went odd times from Sheffield when on steel haulage late 60s. What was the name of the regular haulier in there with brownish coloured wagons?

Not my company’s livery, Pete! Although, having enlarged the photo, I have to admit that the driver is handsome enough to confuse you.

Now that Ginaf does bring back memories Pete! They had it for years, not sure if it’s still in the fleet earning it’s keep though… found it’s predecessor and follow up in the archives…
