RETRO TRUCK SHOW 18th September

I think what’s happening within the truck preservation movement, is precisely the same as the changes that happened within the railway preservation scene. Steam is of course a dominant factor in the latter, but the rise of 1st generation diesel preservation neccessitated a separate, yet concurrent, set of rules being established. In the early days, steam and diesel days were run in parralel, but politics being what they are, many railways, for many years now, run separate diesel running weekends for those enthusiasts who want the sight and sound of early generation diesels. I used to be involved heavily with diesel preservation, but that is by, the by here. I have recently moved from railways to trucks. I also used to have a MK2 ■■■■■■ RS, which I sold to fund my truck purchase and refurbishment. I’m afraid it’s a Ford Cargo, but I am looking forward to bringing it along and supporting the Steel Boys. I can take the usual Ford Cargo jibes, it’s part and parcel

sdg1970, is right, all these preservation scenes evolve as younger people come in with their own memories and interests.

How about a picture of your Cargo sdg1970?
Neil.

OK these two are the only ones I have currently on file, first one prior to a bit of a freshen up:

Second one after new cab wings and a partial respray:

I have better ones, but they are on my phone, which I can’t yet upload as my main PC has gone down and I am on my Missus’s laptop. It has an Eminox on it now, which we fitted last week.

The Ford Cargo is a classic piece of trucking history just as much as Volvo or Scania. Its the variety that makes these shows. Thats a good looking motor be proud of it, the people who mock probably haven’t got a motor at all.

Thanks. I didn’t mean to sound negative about my own truck (in my first post), far from it; but I have had the odd bit of playful banter with other Driver’s here and there if you know what I mean. It’s all very healthy and comical of course and I actually quite like it! :stuck_out_tongue:  See you at the show!

What a fine example of a Ford Cargo…very straight and original…hard to believe that they first came onto the market 30 years ago…

Oh Bloxham, yeah, I got there late on the Saturday morning and couldn’t find the Commercials Team Leader. One of the Marshalls said ‘just park it over there on the back of the Commercials and you’ll be ok’. The Missus and I then went to have a good gander around the rally, but I didn’t realise we had an arena parade around midday. All new to me!?! I left the truck there on the Sunday parked up, but had to nip back home due to unforseen circumstances. I came back aroound 5pm to collect it and did briefly catch a glimpse of your motor - very nice too!

Yep, '81, scary isn’t it really! This one is ex-National Grid and spent much of it’s life based at Didcot Power Station hauling some form of trailer mounted crane they used to use to service pylons with. The last few years of it’s working life was spent at Bramley Power Station in Hants, doing similar. It has clocked up just 130,000kms with a documented service history. It was fairly rotten though when I bought it, having sat around for most of it’s life outdoors. The MIG was on overtime for a few weeks, but I have come to expect that with all the Ford’s I have restored over the years (cars that is!) :unamused: :grimacing: It still needs a scuttle panel, but I’ve spent enough and it can wait. . .

Whats the point in having 2 shows a year at the same venue ?

The first show is the Classic and Vintage show and we were getting complaints of too many newer trucks (scania/volvo etc) taking up the space that it was decided that with the growth of interest in the ‘steel boys’ following that it was time to have another show that catered for the newer trucks. The Classic show has been in existence for 30 years and things have moved on. Gaydon has only a limited amount of space so it made sense for the ‘steel boys’ era to have the space for their own weekend. A lot of time and effort has gone into the Retro Show by a lot of people who are new to putting on an official show.
I hope as many of you who can will come along and support the show. My involvement is with the Classic show so I’m looking forward to good day being able to enjoy the trucks for a change.

Thanks for clearing that up. I personally thought this years classic and vintage show was not as good as previous years. Also there were still trucks in the ‘‘retro’’ category as this forth coming show hence why i asked whats the point in two shows at the same venue

One big show would be best imo catering for all categories and interests but can totally appreciate the space issues.

This freshly restored F16 has been entered for the show.
Neil.

There is some good coverage of the show in the latestTruck and Driver magazine.

given the number of sweedish trucks, maybe ABBA will re group and play Gaydon…one more time ! LOL

truckin_high_rez11[1].jpg

Graham, despite being Swedish I think ABBA preferred German trucks. Sure I heard them saying something like ‘Gimme gimme gimme an MAN after midnight’ must have been planning a night trunk.
Neil.
