To stay on subject, I have actully seen a picture from an american truckstop or canadian in the swedish truck mag “Trailer”.
A picture with alot of noses and a white Magnum in the middle. I don’t know if I have the issue left but I can take a look and see if I find the picture
I’ve seen that pics too. The Magnum looks like a giant. The American trucks look like toys in the front on view compared to the Magnum
My Peterbilt has over a million miles on it and it has only just had some major work on the engine, as it turns out I had a head gasket go and while they had it apart they completely rebuilt it, so it could’ve had the bonnet welded shut for the past 5yrs
I have to say having driven both kinds of truck a conventional is nicer to drive, forwards at least I had a go in an FH last time I was back in the UK and I felt very vulnerable without the big bonnet in front of me
If you like the look of them or not is all down to opinion, they’ve grown on me since I came over here, but personally I still think the best lorry ever made is a Scania 143, especially the look of the thing, but having experienced American Trucks my opinion of them has changed, they are very good at the job they’re meant to do. I don’t mind the gearbox, most of the time, the brakes on the other hand should be discs, no doubt in my mind there, there’s also no doubt that I would not want one in the UK, I’d rather slam my balls in a drawer than drive my Peterbilt through London

Yes I drive a Peterbilt, so my view may be somewhat biased, now, without coming across as a know it all, I do get paid for my opinion on trucks, both in British magazines and Canadian ones, having driven pretty much every truck on the road as a road tester I have a bit of experience to back up my views too.I would say that your experiences have been tainted, a North American Volvo is built to the same standards as a European one, in fact there are a lot of parts common to both. Freightliner are different, they are basic fleet trucks, pile em high and sell em cheap, even the new Cascadia. when you have the likes of Crete Carriers running 7000 Freightliners and JB Hunt or Schneider who have at least double that, you don’t get a lot of frills.
The steering problems you had with the Cascadia are well documented, they have a rack and pinion set up and they got it wrong, it’s been fixed now, but early ones were a disaster
So your ■■■■■■■ is a bit weedy is it? What hp is it? I’m guessing that it only started out as a 455hp and seeing that you drive for a decent size fleet I would bet that they’ve de-rated it in the pursuit of mpg, many big fleets do this, you will also find that you’re geared too high, for some strange reason Volvo love fitting 3:42 rear ends, when a 3:55 is much better and if you’re going 65mph or under most of the time, a set of 3:70s is even better still, in the hills at gross weight that gearing difference will really affect the pulling power
Dont get me wrong, I do like the Volvo and as far as build quality goes I think its superb compared to anything Freightliner have to offer. As for the engine size of the one I have, 455hp would be way too much for an Armour truck. I dont know exactly what it is, I’ve yet to find out but its got no power at all and going by Armour’s own words, that the trucks they use to pull their A-trains are very powerful and especially bought for the job and are a massive 475hp then I’m presuming the normal fleet trucks are 400 or under, its certainly the worst pulling truck I’ve ever driven and Armour are notorious in the Maritimes for having under-powered trucks and getting in everyones way on the hills!
mmm, well i drove a 05 volvo for a year when i first came over then a kw t600 for a year an a half and imo volvo ----good ,tight steering circle…bad small cab, silly electrical faults.
KW------- big cab,had a cat engine ,never let me down once, ride was very good (well it had a longer chasis than the volvo,it suited the work i was on up n sask,ab.). circuit breakers not fuses.
bad----- no so hot in tight spaces ,lol.
Mack well the 80s & 90s i drive the now showed me where built like a mack truck come frae…
the new Mack or should i say volvo/renault should be solt to the navy and used as anchors!
jimmy
shouldnt think itd be that unusual to see them in the states, renault = mack, ive seen a fair few magnums here in oz with MACK on the front, and plenty of premiums too
