Refrigeration revisited

'‘INTERESTING’ may be the wrong choice of word, not to mention a matter of opinion. btw :bulb:

Well perhaps I should fast forward to the freezing of meat then? Explain the procedure and one that I developed specifically? If the actual refrigeration cycle is boring everyone I can skip to that as a more interesting topic? I am easy I thought it might be interesting to some.

Never mind all this Mr encyclopaedia. Months later and you still haven’t answered my egg question. Switchlogic answered it. Some help you are. All theory and no spade work, can’t even help a man with his groceries. I call Fraud I tells ya, fraud!!!

What egg question?

Can we touch on car and truck refrigerant systems like vehicle air conditioning.
I’m like a sponge I am soaking this stuff up.

Sounds a good idea D_D as I think my refrigeration master class is going to the wall. I will do a reefer unit instead

Before I kill this thread dead, does anyone know how to rekindle a youtube account? I actually had a youtube account a few years ago and it had 30K followers, I y=used to call it Big refrigeration and it was full of interesting content on reefers and cold stores. When I deleted the account I did not back any of the videos up, is there a way of opening it up again with the content still intact?

I doubt that you can get the videos back now, I’ve found the channel on Youtube that was last updated in 2014 but there are no videos.

There is however an interesting post on Refridgeration-Engineer.com from someone looking for what may have been your channel.

Hope this does not cause problems with the mods on the forum but I had to see if anyone knows what happened with this English gentleman.
“Big refrigeration” had a channel on YouTube and he covered Industrial refrigeration service like we all do every day. He was going over a purger
issues on one of his later videos and then he was going to post some electrical safety issues and suddenly he is posting an air conditioning ductless
split unit in a house. Suddenly the posts stop, and his channel gets pulled… No more big refrigeration… Any one know what’s happened to this guy?
I thought the guy was great.

Seems like a good idea.

In the other thread Harry Monk explained how a domestic refrigerator works, does a reefer work the same or is does it involve liquid refrigerant ?

A description of how a reefer works, in layman terms, may be of interest to some people on here :bulb:

I have to say I didn’t know about the wind-socks over refrigeration plants, so someone has learned something

The windsock is used to show the direction of wind so in the event of a catastrophic failure, everyone evacuates in the opposite direction. You have aprox 30 secs to get out of an ammonia cloud before a horrendous death takes place. It was an important point that I doubt many actually know but really should. In answer to your question on reefers, they are a compression cycle and use liquid refrigerants. I will do a series on them as it is probably of more interest. Harry did give a very simplified explanation of a domestic refrigerator to which there is little science or complexities involved. I am dealing with industrial refrigeration which is most complex in both design and running. A reefer resembles a small industrial system and uses very similar components, so is a worthy topic.

How extraordinary, that indeed was my channel and my videos were well respected throughout the industry. They were being used in Universities and other teaching establishments without my permission so I pulled the plug. I wished I had backed the videos up but I didn’t, I filmed lots of reefers and my design of some newer reefers were on there too. I hoped I may be able to get them up again as it would be useful and interesting for here.

Refrigeration isn’t for everyone I understand this fact. I can take the ridicule but some would find it useful perhaps interesting and it is for these people I continue. That’s all.

If i take my ice cream out and leave it in ambient will it be ok for a good few hours.

Indeed you can colin, however a few hours may be a bit too much time. I would suggest from frozen around 30 mins as a max.Hope this helps

Ok what about if i took a meat from the freezer can i freeze it again.

Not if you want to avoid food poisoning you wouldn’t do that. actually it may surprise you to hear that ice cream is the worst for giving food poisoning from it thawing and re freezing.

But surely it depends on the total mass of the ice cream portion. Surely there is a formula to calculate this time?

So, what happens in our local butchers then…he puts his meat in to a fridge after being out all day…the next day, we come along buy this meat then keep it in the back of the car till we get home, then freeze it…isnt that an issue…or is it ok to go from fridge to freezer, but not to re-freeze it, even though it may have defrosted in the car on the way home.

I can tell you that it does depend on a number of factors even down to flavours that will soften quicker than others. Too many variables to discuss on a thread such as this.

No once meat has been frozen and then defrosted it must not be re frozen, prawns were a big issue at one time with been refrozen after been defrosted where various techniques were introduced and trialed, fish is another speciality freeze that requires careful consideration on a commercial basis.
