Those pull out marker boards & lights are excellent.
This thread reminds me of many years ago when I hadn’t had my LGV licence long & i was doing trade plate work to get experience.
I remember a group of us coming down from Scotland one night with various assorted commercial vehicles. One guy, a youngish chap i remember, had a refuse truck, quite new 6 wheeler with lots of beacons on it. The beacons were on.
We were running with him in the dark for hundreds of miles.
At the first stop it was soon mentioned to him about the beacons being on. He said he knew, but couldn’t find the switch. We all looked & no one could find it. Remains a mystery to this day.
Luckily i was running as back marker man so they weren’t too blinding to me, but it was easy to spot him
A lowloader overtook me on the m5 heading south. It was early in the morning so was dark & was raining. He didnt really have what i would call a heavy load but had 2 beacons flashing on rear of trailer. Dazzled me!!!

I find the worst offender’s to be recovery vehicles (the AA etc) do you really need a full width beacon switched on because you’ve got a Nissan Micra on the back?!■■!■■
Afraid this is wrong
I think it is vehicle lighting regs but “recovery vehicles” are allowed to show amber beacons when towing.
I don’t like it either but there you go.
Why a Micra is anything other than a trailer is beyond me

There you go, the ones towing(AAetc), does that mean if youre pulling a trailer in an artic you gotta do the same■■?
And to quote again, allowed to show beacons when towing…
the ones i usually see have got the car on the body of the chassis, not on tow, but yet they still seem to have the bloody beacons on, its like a … im in a little truck but am important, look at me with my lights…
a bunch of bell ends if you ask me.

Amen to that, fair enough when they’re on the hard shoulder, but running down the road NO NO NO.
I have done a lot of abnormal load work.
And i must agree that the flashing beacon on the rear doesn’t need to be so bright that it blinds people. “what’s the point?”.
It only needs to be seen.
However a beacon is much better than a marker board as people take no notice of marker boards, but they take 50% more notice of nothing when using a beacon.
So how do the rules apply to gritter lorrys? Was out with the mrs in her van the other night, she was doing 40 in 40mph zone. A gritter lorry overtook her with all beacons flashing and showered us with salt, she wasn’t best pleased because her window was open

Tiger.
I will then take this thread totally off topic and let someone else get it back on track
So how do the rules apply to gritter lorrys?
Well in France they use blue beacons like the emergency services, it makes motorists take notice and keep an eye on their mirrors.
And. Why can Vosa and Hato not use blue lights?
But the Highways Agency working for a French toll company in the UK can
