radios

Radio was no good in an A series ERF, so i screwed a casette player and two wedge speakers to a flat piece of wood, and ran two wires with croc clips down to the battery, did that every night, tried to alternate which battery got used.

Yep, you guessed it, one night it was really loud, far better than before, then after a while it blew up, seems it didn’t like 24v… :unamused:

There was a late night radio show that used to go out near the Mont Blonk and Frazers tunnels. I think it must have been a pirate station there didn’t seeem to be any DJ, and it used to repeat the phrase Cool a twa. The only other French station I used to put on was Sky Rock but they used to play Coollio’s Gangstars Paradice about 3 time an hour, so it was usually the cassette. There was a station near Ancona that was only on in the evening an only played Pink Flody. Turkish radio was a bit of a laugh as was Greek and Russian radio. I never got any kind of reception in Kaz., and Saudi radio was always a bit hit and miss as well. There was a lot of Euro pop in Spain, and I never thought much of Dutch or German radio either. Some of the Scandanavian countries were pretty good. Radio in Australia is pretty much the same as in America where it’s usual for a station to only play one kind of music and if you want to hear something differant you have to retune to another station.
Best of all was radio one in the 70’s to 90’s for a wide range of choice, and porfessionalism.
If you had a basic understanding of the local launguage then listening to the radio in that country could beeing your launguage skills along pretty fast.

The radios were OK in our “A” Series I can’t just remember if the ERF’s were the same as the Borderers which had the insulated earth return electrics. The transistor Radiomobiles were fitted into the middle of the dash on the ERF’s with the speaker in the head lining. In the Borderers we used the self contained Radiomobiles with the radio and speaker enclose in a binnicle and we fixed it onto the centre of the dash in fron’t of the centre windscreen panel.Obviously the ■■■■■■■ and Gardners weren’t as quiet as the Scania/Volvos but you could hear them OK basically. Cheers Bewick.

Thing i miss most about early morning radio is the late Ray Moore, and his funny exchanges at handover to Terry Wogan, one morning Terry got stuck in traffic and was late for his show…for a few weeks after Ray would make the odd mention during his show, along the lines of ‘‘no rush Terry, take your time, any time will do’’, brilliant…gentle humour and harmless teasing, i miss those days.

Do you remember Terry Wogan goin on about mattresses on layby"s very funny cheers

edit, repeating meself again.

I used to howl at the Janet and John routines on Terry’s show, best one of all time was when John gave Janet a pearl necklace, cue a useless Terry and crew for about 10 minutes till they got themselves back under control, brilliant stuff.

Now we have the talents of Name Dropper Feltz to entertain us :unamused: , well i don’t because i’ve almost given up completely on the state broadcaster, and i’d rather plunge hot needles in me shell likes than listen to the drivel of her, or Jeremy Whine…gawd that reminds me how much i used to enjoy the Jimmy Young show too.

Cheers Judd

In the earley 60s I drove a Mk 5 AEC 8 Wheeler ridged, I had a Transistor Radio (Perdio) I had a tin lid fastened to the top of the dash with one screw in the middle with the radio fastened to it so when I changed direction I could turn the radio so as to still maintain a reception, A good pal of mine had a Pye radio fitted in his, & he allways refered to it as his lay bye Pye because that’s the only time he good get a decent reception when he was standing still, Happy days, Regards Larry.

When I worked for Thompsons Transport of Moretonhampstead, Devon in the very early 70’s Mr Thompson, who was a good man and very good to his drivers, had all the vehicles properly fitted with Pye radios. It was very nice of him but in an AEC Mandator you could not hear a sound until you had completely stopped so you tended to get the news in odd, disjointed bits.

But when I was promoted to a Scania 110 the world changed. News was instant and there was music! :open_mouth:

Had a transistor in 1960, it was as far as i could remember a KB Starlight Rhapsody, used it on the farm when i was milking. In 63 worked for Fred Bamber Cardinal feeds in Preston delivering bagged animal feed.the radio worked great in a TK Bedford but would not work in a Thames Trader.

^+1. Spot on Judd, really brightened the day up in those days listening to the interchange on Wogan (all unscripted of course) and JY could get the best out of his guests and public phone-in’s by remaining impartial without resorting to talking down or interrupting them. For someone who was basically a singer and not a journalist he could teach Vine a lot about dealing with folk!

Until I had my Foden S10 I just relied on a battery powered tape player for music, did try a portable radio but got fed up with it losing stations and dropping off the bonnet!!

Pete.
