Assuming we are looking for the canal as we know the road is it the chesrterfield canal heading toward Kiverton.

No. It is the M1. I’ll give you another clue. It is a service area location. You would need to be very observant to notice the canal at all, but it is there.
(I’m not trying to be clever with these. It comes from my driving days when I couldn’t cross a canal without making the effort to stop and explore it.)
You can’t do that nowadays, I know. The controls are too stringent, but the waterways are there, criss-crossing the roads because the roads follow the old water transport routes, as do the railways.

Junction 15A, Northampton services, more noticeable from the slip roads to/from the A43 than the motorway.

Is it the canal which passes under the M1 just north of Watford Gap services and south of junction 17?
Not that far off, but no. That is the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union. Not many drivers know, but if you pull into Watford Gap services north bound, you can walk through the back boundary fence and find yourself on the towpath of the canal. Go right and you quickly come top Watford Flight of locks, which are a staircase in two groups. Well worth a visit.
For the location of the image, you need to come southwards from there. It is the Northampton branch of the Grand Union. But what is the service area called?

I changed my answer and edited my post while you were posting your reply, I realised I had the wrong bit in mind and it wasn’t the one at the Gap I was thinking of.
I walked that bit of canal by Watford Locks last year, got some photographs somewhere.
looks like the canal at Rothersthorpe, just by the roundabout with the A43, locks on one side & on the Northampton side is the little raising bridge? Or is it quack quack again?

Exactly right. This shot was taken back in 1980 something, but I guess it won’t have changed that much under the M1.

Recognise this then?
