Question for manual gearbox drivers

The only time I knock it into neutral is if if on a gentle slope being in 16th drops me below the limiter but being in neutral keeps me on it or slightly over. ‘My’ truck was spec’d with extra air tanks so I never get low on air.
Going down steep hills I use the gears and exhaust brake as much as possible to keep the over speed sensible.
I was taught when doing my training years ago never to coast so imagine my disgust when I first drove a truck with an auto that went into neutral going down hill [emoji33]

I pray that the op was just trolling…
But it has made me wonder has anyone ever thrown their truck in one of those emergency sandpits? I often look at them and wonder how scary it would be. Of course probably less scary than not stopping.
Question is would it work and would it/did it do much damage.

Most of the time I drive a rigid with (at most) about 3 tonnes of payload. Releasing the acc. in 6th/8th downhill usually slows me down from 54 to 45 in under 20 seconds. When going down steep (i.e. Old Telegraph Hill or the M20 towards Canterbury) of course I’ll be in gear and not the highest one, with exhaust brake on. I’ve driven fully loaded 18tonners and I wouldn’t dare to coast in one even on the slightest descent. The question was in principle, all things considered…like I’ll be going downhill in my near empty rigid trying to overtake a Tesco and he’ll go from 52 to 55-56 as soon as I’m level with him, of course I’m kicking that ■■■■ in neutral all the way to 60+ to complete my overtake (and flash the Micra in front of me 16 times in rapid succession :smiling_imp: )
