Our trailer fleet went through the change from ratchet cable type to automatic application when the red line was removed. That would have been around mid 1990’s.You had to press the brake release button after coupling up. Either way the trailer’s security is totally reliant on staying coupled at the fifth wheel until you’re sure that the trailer brakes have been applied.Never pin before brakes and legs.
Our fridges have mavis rails, but couple quite close. The ones with the red line coupling furthest from the nearside can be a little harder than the others (195…..that we have), putting a little kink on the cab as you go on the pin buys a little more room, but worst case I loose some air from the unit with the foot brake if it’s making me struggle.
Split coupling is outlawed in our procedures, I guess down to working with the lowest common denominator l, that said he who has not sinned cast the first stone, so I should shut up..!
