Bet your not gonna be missing that next week Reef
Last day completed… gloves, boots, hi-viz jacket binned. Bathed and deodorised and looking forward to a nice clean fresh smelling working week from now on.
Oh and it’ll be nice to open my mouth and not swallow a [zb]ing fly like i did last week !!
Have fun in your new job Reef
Thanks Rog. Very helpful.
Now I’ve just got to get it into my thick head and do it.
ROG:
On the down changes it will help you a lot if your foot is on the accelerator and not the brake when changing the gear as it gives you the option of “blipping the throttle” to match transmission speed with road speed if you are going a bit too fast for the gear to comfortably engage. It is also known as the “racing driver gear change” for when they want to keep high revs when going into a lower gear.
When I worked on Formula Fords, the standard method of getting quick downshift was to use a technique called heel and toe. That meant that you could continue braking but still blip the throttle pedal, However I’d not recommend that method for truck unless you have size 20 feet.
Of course F1 and GP2 cars only have 2 pedals and shifts are done through paddles on the steering wheel linked to a computer which blips that throttle on the down shift quicker than anybody person could do it.
The Great Double-Declutching Debate has been split into it’s own topic of that name, as it was in danger of derailing this thread completely!

I like that plan sounds good

Yes, this thread could be made a sticky so you don’t have to keep bumping it
I have, before you go out training - BUY SOME GOOD SUNGLASSES you will be in a cab for 8 hours if your doublemanning and you will be driving for 4 hours or more a day. On top of that you will be concentraiting and trying to remember everything you see and hear.
The last thing you need is to be making mistakes because of glare and tired eyes.
thats my top tip

great thread plenty of top tips for a newbie like me,
tried driving my car without using rearview mirror took a bit of getting used to but ok. Have realised just how many bad habits i’ll have to sort out though, crossing hands, one handed steering to mention but 2,
