Very nice CG, very nice indeed. Us old lads like the old motors. Driving and working them was an art, these days if a “driver” can work a ratchet strap or use a tanker snap clip coupling he thinks he is a lorry driver. In days gone by there was just a little bit more to the job.

An old mate of mine e-mailed me today, Ray Stanley who started work in Urmston in 1980 He tells me he was lucky and copped for a new Scania. At the time the old lags were not to happy, but come winter they didnt mind him doing trips to Italy and Yogo back loading from Grubers at ludwigshaven. Fantastic money and experience

As a youngster I went to spain with Ray, never had a problem, sorry to hear of his passing. iirc he was driving a MAN

Spoke to Dave Smith and Polly about your dad, seems to be respected until the day he retired even though he was shop steward for years !!.
Dave mentioned his “love” of all things German and their revenge Inflicting the Mercedes truck into the UK market fitted with the three pointed Devils badge. Seemed to know about his early days driving for fison, and the day he fell of the tank, broke his leg but was back driving within weeks and then his later years on Anhydrous Ammonia
