perkins engines

How about this Perkins T12 1000bhp developed around 1939. It had two banks of six cylinders that were powered separately with their own fuel, water and oil pumps so in the event of problems in one side of the engine the other would still operate normally, supercharged from a central gear driven unit to achieve the required 1000bhp. Unfortunately not a vehicle engine but developed for use in motor torpedo and other fast attack naval vessels to replace the much used Merlin engine that aircraft had priority for. Rather heavy at two Tons it was however said to be quite reliable and because cheaper American petrol engines became available only about half a dozen of the T12’s were built with the one in the pic being the only one left. Very tidy it looks too, wonder how it sounded! Franky.

Great info Franky, I reckon if it could have been fitted into a wagon it would have outpaced anything, Regards Larry.
