One of Mr Hare’s trucks wasnt so lucky in the 70’s .He ran out of brakes coming down Buxton Hill and used a six wheeler carrying tarmac as a backstop both lorries turned over spreading stone and tarmac all over the market place, fortunately it was a Wednesday and not to many people about so noone was seriously injured.
Was that one of his Scania’s.? I had moved on about 74, must have happened in the second half of the 70s .
You must have worked with Dennis ? He was the shovel driver in my memory but drove lorries before then .
hiya paul , i remember walter getting that erf , chapman twins from chelmorton had identical motors , all the bodies were similar so they could have been new build . before the erf walter had a lad cabbed leyland comet ex craig lelo ( spelling ) granite corwen . hell , that’s over 50 years ago now i must be getting old ! dave

Yes i did,Dennis was the first bloke i met when i turned up to start work with Jimmy Hare.
I promptly had to make my excuses and go and find a dentist as i had raging toothache.
I had 6 teeth out and went back to meet him at Sturge Chemicals. He took me up to Yoxall where AOM ,the first Guy Invincible was parked.
He then accompanied me to Ashwood Dale and back. That was my first day lorry driving.
Dennis was using LOG then, the AEC Mammoth Major with the high sides.
His Father in Law,Bob, was the shovel driver at Lifford, driving a old Bray.
When Bob retired Dennis came off the road and took on old Bobs job and was still there when i left some years later.
Jeff bought the bray loader when it was replaced by a 4 wheel drive ,he sold it on to a local spar mineral mill ,sturges old ford d series is now owned by Stephen Dale and was replaced by leyland freighter which I bought when it’s cab rotted away ,I drove it back with no windows in and sold it for export .
This is Jimmy Hares first Scania 110.
This is 1971, i think?
He had talked about buying a Guy Big J8.
Some years later i did drive a Big J4, which, unsurprisingly, was a big improvement on the Invincibles, but thats another story.
The Scania appeared via B+ W motors of Wolverhampton, with a York/Welford tandem tipping trailer.
Jim painted his own lorries and UVP 40H is seen freshly painted and awaiting transfers at Lifford.
Trouble was neither of us where qualified to drive it,so Jim went off to the West Mids Training school at Halfpenny Green airfield for a weeks course.
He passed first time and i took over OOG, one of the AEC Mammoth Majors.
Very nice AEC Mercury here belonging to B J Waters.Anyone know if they still have this on the rally scene or has it long gone? transportphotos.com/road/photos
I haven’t seen the AEC around for a while John, I can ask David our club secretary tomorrow at Ashover Show as he part owns the LV ERF four wheeler (ex Knights of Rowsley) that Waters have in their livery. The Atkinson unit and ERF eight legger were at the Cromford rally last weekend (along with David’s LV) but not the AEC.

John/Pete,
I have a feeling this belongs to a lad in Telford and now he has no connection with Waters it may have been resprayed or I may be going doolally! I will find out later this evening for you, Cheer’s Pete
