Butting in here Mick! No Bonkey, Mick on the right was the owner of both and drove the 4 wheeler Clydesdale and Shaun (the chief test pilot!
) drove the Foden which was a six wheeler and new to Don Fox from Kniveton. I actually drove the Foden when Don was taken ill in Ashbourne on the way to Leicester with tarmac, my truck was on MOT prep so I was kicking my heels in the garage and was asked to deliver the load. It was a slow thing really compared to our eight leggers with the same engine (Gardner 6LXC) and I reckoned that Don possibly nursed it when new which was fatal with a Gardner! As an aside, when I got to the job at Groby Road Hospital, Glenfield, a nurse had been murdered in the grounds overnight so the job was stopped until the law had done their work. Very sad for the lady and her family, I never heard if anyone was caught for it. The Foden ended up at Qualcast I believe when Shaun was given a nice new Constructor to aim!!!
Pete.
Nice one Pete, cheers for the details. So the Leyland was a Clydesdale whereas the Haulmaster was a six wheeler. The Haulmaster was a little slow with the 201 Gardner. Needed the RR265 for the oomph required round here.
And ta for the pics malmic. They ace so if there’s any others, please keep 'em coming.

turn it round for me Dan
Work must have been very good around the 1988/89 period, in our area of Derbyshire at least, as many o/d’s at the various local quarries purchased new trucks, a lot of them upgrading from a four to a six wheeler as they were the ‘in thing’ for tarmac work at that time. And then…it all stopped!! A lot of them kept the same vehicle for many years, my own gaffer had an F reg Foden brand new and finally sold it in 2004 when he called it a day for good. Something tells me now that those ‘halcyon days’ of the late 80’s were perhaps the best time work and rate wise and it hasn’t reached those heights again since?
What say you Michael? (and sort those pictures out!)
Pete.
You don’t see many 8 wheelers with spoked wheels.
Yes Pete the mid to late 80s were pretty good but then the whole country went into recession and after the M40 was finished there were to many lorries for to little work.I suppose it was similar to what happened before the crash of 2008.That more or less wiped out the hired hauliers.
I think the motorbike is still here ,shame the Atki isn’t .
