Before my time in the area but I believe that Gough’s carted blocks from there Dan and it was good work, didn’t the owner get bumped off?
Pete.
My Dad did work from there with the V8 ford and Erf 6 wheeler when it was loaded by hand ,him and the man who used to live in the first house on steeple grange corner of malt house close would load by hand at night and on Sundays ,father was in the barbers in wirksworth when a man came in asking who’s lorry was parked outside ,father said mine why ,the man said do you want to go to London now ,he went with out finishing the hair cut .
I used to occasionally deliver asphalt blocks from there mainly to London. In the 70’s it was owned by Cambridge asphalt and John Alsop was responsible for the haulage.I do recognise that lorry but can’t put a name to the owner.Didn’t know that place was still going it was pretty basic when I used to load from there. I would think it needed a fair bit of updating to comply with the H&S nowadays.
Cambridge asphalt was later mick ,Brian Moor was the manager who’s son married my mums sister .

Sorry Dan got my dates mixed up it would be the 80, s
Another one of Allinsons Maggi’s.Were these owned by Allinson or were they owner drivers who ran them anyone know?
Hiya…i used to take kegs(cardboard)of bitumen to Middleton from Laybond at Saltney. Laybond was Colas(owned by Shell)
Laybond was the result of a management buy out.we still did Colas Blending.that would be around 1994 ish i’d think.
it was 19 years earlier i did sugarstone from Middleton to Newark for Richardsons at Waterhouses along with WH Phillips
and Dave Mellor lads from Ashbourne.the first time i did the kegs i got a map how to find Middleton mine from Saltney
i fell over laughing when they gave it to me. i told them i’d done thousands of tons from there in the 70,s.

dont think we had any owner drivers that had maggies ,i think the Fodens finished them off that body looks strange to me as most of the bodies were ally but i did have a spell away and when i came back in the late 80s we had iveco’s.
heres a couple of pics from the Leyland motor museum a few months ago. The foden i believe was never owned by Sammy Longson
rebbyvid, can I commend you on your crystal clear photos? I’m now considering throwing away my digital camera which I had thought was quite adequate until I saw yours.
