Hi Dean, The Foden is defintely not Chris Dares as at that time he was running all Dafs apart from one Renault G340 that he bought from the dealership at Kinson Pottery estate. Poole.

Just remembered it was from Belbens Commercials and although it was brand new on a C reg it was a heap, no one wanted to drive it so Chris drove it most of the time. !

Chris Webb:
Morning Dean.
STD code 01495 is Pontypool and 01746 is Bridgnorth if that helps.

Cheers Chris.

coomsey:
Bit of information of one of them Dean

Impressive machines “coomsey” and they must be some of the heaviest machines operated in Europe.

Here’s a bit from 1946 on the Marion Steam Shovel Company machine that weighed 1500 tons.

tyneside:
In 1973 I was doing a transport related short course at Ashington Tech. The drag line Big Geordie (one of the biggest in Europe at the time) was working at an open cast site a few miles away. One of the course lecturers knew the site manager and managed to get us a “working visit” (research■■?) Anyway we ended up in the drag line cabin when it was working, quite an experience.
A few weeks previous to our visit, Derek Crouch, the site operators, had replaced 1.5 miles of conveyor belt for spoil with 3 or 4 LectraHaul dumpers.
They had something like a CAT V12 or V16 donkey engine feeding electric turbine drive hubs.

Tyneside

Intresting “Tyneside” some of the cables etc need replacing fairly often. Apart from costing a fortune to buy they also cost a fortune to
operate as things like the buckets soon wear out and the teeth. Out of intrest how noisey was it inside the cab ?

coomsey:
I was put on one as a stand in grease monkey, the regular rang in sick. I lasted about an hour, seasick on land :unamused:

:unamused:

pete smith:
Hi Dean,
The FH looks like one of Thomas Plant Hire from near Holywell North Wales.
Clive Cowern are from Bridgnorth and also have a depot in Wolverhampton.

Cheers Pete,i will never know how you remember it all !

Thanks for confirming “steam” it’s not one of Chris Dares motor’s but does look similar but i remember all the DAF’s.

Ok i did think it looked like one of his but i dont remember it.

Belben’s on Ringwood road were dealers for several different manufacturers over the years. Here’s an advert from 1978.

Its a long time ago but IIRC it was relatively quiet. The operator sat well forward and there was probably about room for half a dozen of us to stand immediately behind. My memory is the length / size of the boom and bucket, from the cab it looked like it was half a mile away !!

Yes not so noisy in the cab,our two had mini kitchen in them. Weren’t too bad in the back either Like a cathedral in the back with two overhead cranes. The jib was pressurised with some gas that left a pink trace if it leaked, one of the fitters used to visual check it once a week,he had legs like a hoss

Thanks for the comments “Tyneside” Certainly a monster of a machine. I have some dvd’s that are very intresting to watch and the facts
and figures they come out with are incredible. Must have taken an awful lot of truck loads to transport the machine to the mine in pieces to
be assembled.

Hate to think how much this machine weighed. As it says in the clipping to give you an idea of the size look at the size of the bull dozer at
the bottom of the pic near the bucket wheel.

This may bring back some memories for anyone that regularly went to London.

London parking for trucks in 1962.

Foden sales 1977.

Leyland sales 1968.

Atkinson at the Scottish Motor Exhibition in 1969.

Heavy Lorry Benefits 1982.

Saviem 1977.

The original Severn bridge in the distance.

Preece Scania from ■■

Dont think we have had a Hick’s motor in this colour scheme before,so imagine its in a large customer’s colours ■■

Phill Webb Renault working for Hanson’s.

Cant remember if we have had a Severn Sands motor on before.

C.Pike from Newport.

Not had a Chambers & Cook motor on for along time. Are they still going as this pic was taken in 2010 ■■

Steve Woolston Foden bulker seen here after coming over the flyover at Ringwood in heavy traffic which is the norm there.

B & M Transport Volvo from Stoke on Trent.

Very smart Scania of H.J.Van Bentum seen here on the Wimborne bypass. Not sure if they are still going but used to build there
own tanker trailers that were extremely light for maximum payload.

A couple of weeks ago we had a J & W Hino tipper on here that “robthedog” told us was from Fair Oak near Eastleigh and this Bison tipper
was following it in the same colours so assume its the same company.

Phil Horridge’s ERF NGC from Hamworthy,Poole.

This well used F7 look like it was an ex Malcolm motor so possibly run here by an owner driver on the Holes Bay road job.
Looking at the state of the tipper it may have been on its side at some point !!

R.H.Roadstone Foden with one of there Octopuses in the background. Not sure where there yard was but possibly on West Howe Industrial
estate as someone had a tarmac yard there apparently ?

Greenwoods Atkinson Borderer.Unusually its not collecting a trailer of Zanussi washing machines from Poole docks as seen here heading
away from the docks.

Is the walk through van pulling out a Bedford ■■

Anyone recognise the Servicised Dodge ■■

Inter County Express ERF. Were they something to do with TNT does anyone know ■■

Looks like Ingrem on the door of the Seddon. Think Ingrem’s were from Lymington, and if its the same one they did more bulker
work like grain normally.

J.C. Aylesbury Transport DAF from ■■? Look how narrow the tyres are on the Ford ■■■■■■.

Looks like Collier & Sons on the headboard. Ayone know where they were based ■■

Dean Ingrem’s were from Lymington and they also did loads of fruit from 105 berth in Southampton, Buzzer

Electric Dean, much doings keeping the cables where they wanted them. When she walked you had to throw lumps of"black jack"into the cam, behind the men. It was hard work chopping lumps off but after one revolution it turned into something like boiling water. I seem to remember that it took around a year to build, both were dismantled but not sure where they were sent. Maybe someone will recall the one they walked Corby area,it was quite a distance but easier than rebuilding.
By the way I’m the good looking one on the ground with the black tee shirt, orange didn’t suit the colour of my eyes. Cheers coomsey

Servicised were from Ajax Ave at Slough Dean. Long time Dodge users then Renault until the transport side was hived off to Exel Logistics. When I started my apprenticeship at Reading Garage Dodge Truck Centre in 1980 that Barreiros was in the yard after being involved in an accident. They had a few Barreiros - KFC656N , BUD45R , VJO835T , CJO913V and three of the last ones built LJM141 - 142 and 143X. They then had 2 ERF’s RTF667Y and B217GRD before going onto Renault G290’s D202 and D203WRD. Originally a Green livery but then went to Grey. The B reg ERF and the B reg Dodge in the photo were the first vehicles they bought with sleeper cabs. Up till then they went all over the U.K. in day cabs and stayed in digs. Even though Reading looked after all their lorries they used to buy them from Partridges at Cassingdon the Oxfordshire Dodge Dealer.
Driver of the one in the photo was Norman Beckett.

Many of my friends worked for Shand at Rowsley, they were a large employer in this area and you could always get a job there. They built part of the M6 over Shap, the M10 and constructed many bridges and reservoirs and you could fill a book with their escapades regarding the vehicles they ran on opencast sites etc! :open_mouth: One trip involved driving three earth scrapers from Durham to St Albans, none of the driver’s had driven them before and they demolished a couple of islands on the A1 before they got the hang of them. Then in Stamford a car (a prewar Austin ten) was parked and the owner refused to move it until he finished shopping despite the Police ■■■■■■ asking him nicely; with the copper’s permission three earth scrapers ran over the top of it and no more was heard about it! The Peak Village shopping centre occupies the site now.

Pete.

Thanks for confirming it was a bedford Ray. Had a quick look in the archives and it’s a CA van with Hawson body which i believe
was also built by Bedford.

The CA van was introduced in 1962.

Alot were electric “coomsey” and often had a loading shovel that would move the electric cable so it never got run over as you will be aware.

Heres a bit about one from 1979 that was shipped to the USA weighing approximately 1750 tonnes !!! :open_mouth:

It also mentions that a smaller Ransomes Rapier dragline moved 13 miles to another quarry and it took 6 months under its own power !!!
They reckon it would have taken 2 years to dismantle, move and reasemble. :unamused:
