Hi dean ,when we loaded trailers in bsc pt each firm had about 10 shunters day and night we would load 7 trailers a day if lucky 5 was the max so road drivers were busy ,they would be local,Midlands, north, north east,Scotland and north wales cheers John
Sounds like a right “doss” for Shunters “small coal” some of our shunters loaded, sheeted and roped 12 to 15 trailers most days ! cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis, the trouble with port talbot with the bay’s you could only put so many in and every shunter went in turn sometimes you could have 2 bays and it depended on the crane drivers what mood they are in then the queues on the weighbridge a daily slog each day cheers John

no criticism intended mate ! I know what your saying about the practices that went on in The Abbey from the days I went in on the Brady Octopus and trailer delivering Signode strapping from Barrow Steel ! The longest waits we had to reload for the N. West were always in Neath MB, but it was a decent bar in The Club !! had a pint or two in there !! Cheers Dennis.

240 Gardner…I use to drive one of Richard’s Atkinsons back in the 70’s, I think he had 3 in total, use for local work and running from Chrysler Birmingham to High Ercall, I dropped a piston in one on Newport high street.
Thank you. For whatever reason, it was a firm I had never crossed paths with, nor even heard of, until fairly recently, but they seem a tidy outfit and their restored motors look well.
Thanks for your input “240gardner”

0Edwards was originally started in 1946 by Geoff Edwards and was run under the name of ‘Edwards of Hull Ltd’ until around 1998 when they changed the name to Edwards Logistics.
Found this interesting little snippet regarding Edwards of Hull from September 1956 in the Commercial Motor Archive
When Edwards of Hull, Ltd applied last week to add two vehicles totaling 6 tons to their A licence the Yorkshire Licensing Authority said that they had built up traffic which British Road Services had neglected.
Mr. R. E. Paterson, for the applicants, said that they were engaged exclusively on a trunk service to Bristol and South Wales with eight vehicles and also had a B-licensed vehicle in Hull for collection and delivery.
There was no other regular service to the Southwest of England from Kingston upon Hull.
Following demands from customers, a twice-weekly journey to Exeter, Torquay, Taunton and Plymouth had been started.
In the year ended July 1955 the company’s own vehicles had earned £17,189 and hired transport £19,426.
I understood that, at some stage, Edwards was acquired by Ideal Standard, and which was one of their major customers
01 858 7394 was Edwards of Hull Greenwich backload number in the early 70,s.
Loads of drops with the ideal standard work.[multidrop]
Remember B A Rogers had a driver called Tarzan who drove a Big j and went onto a Seddon atki 400.
Great photos Dean and if you go onto page 634 of the South Wales thread you will see me in front of a Western Brs 81 Scania
with my late dad.I am like smallcoal remembering all the drivers and firms like Hill,s,Blueline,JR etc.
Regards
Dai
Thanks for your comments Dai, pop your photos on if you have some.

This was an operator that passed me by for many years, and I see that he has acquired a pair of previously restored Atkis and painted them in his livery - I think they look well, and nice to see that he actually operated them in the day.

Always a good place to break down in the middle of a high street !!!
