Is that shanks/mcewan green trucks as I worked for shanks in swansea
Buzzer:
Dean maybe wrong but think the Renault was run by the car parts place they ran in this country, I have pulled loads of SCAC trailers mainly from Pompey first to there Reading distribution depot and there after to there purpose built new place at Swindon, usually it was containers on skelly’s.
Waters Bros were based at Cadnam and worked soley for R.F.Giddings at Bartley, two Brothers Dave & Mike who had a son who think still does a bit, as for Giddings that became a big concern making alot of fencing supplies, went by last week and now owned by a new company. Waters started out with a feather in the cap GUY six wheeler and installed a HIAB loader on it then eventually moved on to the Scania’s, cheers Buzzer.
Thanks for the info Buzzer. Were Giddings situated on the main road A336 from Cadnam heading towards Totton as i seem to remember there
was a timber yard there on the left. Used to be a cafe on the RHS just past the large layby on the left but that has been shut for years now.

“windrush” Trouble at the quarry Pete ! (1991)Yes Dean, Michael is actually contributor on this forum, and owned one of the few firms that I would have worked for if my circumstances had been different. He may comment about the article if he reads this but it was a bad time, and anyone who had tippers in any UK quarries would agree with that. I doubt that things are much different these days either, Mick packed in a few year ago with the lorries but tippers have always been the ‘poor relatives’ in road haulage. It became far worse when the quarries got rid of their own transport and relied solely on hired hauliers. The quarry gets a large order: “Plenty of work for you lads” they would tell you. Then you get the rate, nearly always cut to the bone as the first thing cut was the rate, the price of material usually came later. So you had plenty of work, but you either did it for the rate given or stopped at home. Tarmac would have ‘SR’ printed on their tickets meaning ‘Special Rate’ which was not good to see!
One case: Tilcons quarry near Kington on the Welsh Borders (near where Dave the Renegade rip lived) had a massive order for stone to the M5 widening yet the rate was so poor that many local hauliers refused to do it and just sat in the weigbridge all day hoping better work would come on. Tilcons own fleet based there had been sold. So we (now working for a haulier who purchased Tilcon tippers at our quarry and ran them himself) were sent down from Derbyshire to cart it, two drivers lodged down there all week at one time and others like myself did a few loads when in the area but hundreds of tonnes daily didn’t get delivered. In the end our gaffer realised that he was also losing money on it and we stopped going, I don’t know if the rate ever went up though?
Pete.
Thanks for the comments about that article Pete,i thought you might know about it.

Not ringing any bells John, but no doubt someone will know.
Hi Dean
Cracking pics again…
The last pic with the fairground selection is a little gem - the Kv on the left was owned by a lovely fella called Sam Godwin. He passed away a good few years ago. He restored the lorry on his driveway and made a lovely job of it. His wife did all the interior off the cab - she made a beautiful red leather buttoned bonnet cover for it and did all the dash as well, it was really smart. I never knew what happened to the lorry after Sam died, I haven’t seen it since… Next to it is Bo Martins old Seddon. A lovely old thing powered by a Perkins P6… Bo also passed away some years ago and the lorry disappeared until last year when a distant relation of his bought it. It will be back on the show circuit when we’re allowed back out to play!
Syms of Calne. What can you say? Cracking firm with some really nice kit, proper general hauliers, long gone but never forgotten…
The ARC routeman. Not sure if this was taken after its ARC life but it was a Chipping Sodbury lorryfrom new, usually driven by Pip Godwin. It was the last of the routemans in Sodbury, ARC then started buying Leyland Constructors on ‘W’ regs…
Happy New Year to you, Paul and Mark
Thank you all, yet again, for all the memories

Yes that’s the one, we used do mainly hazardous stuff, went down to pontypool quite frequently, think it was called Rechem. We had at least one load a day out of Avonmouth. Best paying job I had, we had London Brick terms and conditions which were excellent as Shanks around Brogborough and Stewartby were morphed from London Brick Landfill.Couple of photos here nmp.

Dean your bang on with the location of Giddings saw mill, mention of the cafe just before there mill where the old radio mast used to stand brought back memories as I went to Bartley secondary school a little further up the road to Cadnam, when we had to endure a cross country run round Winsor and the back lanes me and a couple mates thought sod that and we waited till the throng had gone and slipped out the back gate down to that cafe and ordered up sausage and chips, our plan was to eat this and join the tail enders but the PE instructor got wind of our ploy and caught us red handed just as the plates were put on the table, needles to say a couple truck drivers benefitted from a free meal, Mary Hopkins moment right there, Buzzer.

Not had a Rhys Davies motor on for a while. Not likely to be any new ones either, by the sound of it, since they went into administration earlier this month. It seems that the new owners who bought it last year, aren’t actually supporting it

Yeah bad news Chris.

Hi Dean, Great info and pictures of Elddis Transport. I seem to recall a transport company quite a few years ago
that was called Siddle C.Cook. Somebody mentioned that it was re-named to Elddis if you take a squint at the
reverse spelling. Was I dreaming ? Was somebody winding me up ? or perhaps it was true ■■
Best wishes to you and yours for 2021.
