Yes Dean, MTC are no longer. One of my neighbours and some of my friends drove for them at various times, and an occasional contributor on these pages worked for them as well. There are plenty of pics of their Dodges, Bedfords and the family on Facebook. George Lowe offered me a job a few years ago but a week away in a Clydesdale four wheeler with a sleeper box didn’t really appeal. We did (briefly) get around to talking about money: " The more I pay you means my wages clerk has to work harder to deal with it, and I find that money spoils a good worker/boss relationship anyway" so I stayed at Tilcon and slept in my own bed!Good old George, I did manage to sell him a trailer tent and a camping trailer though and I also spent a week in his camping field several years ago renovating the toilets for him!
Pete.
Thanks for confirming Pete !
Shame to see another company gone, and they looked like they run really tidy motors.
Nice story about the tent and trailer !

Pffffttt. Although they were not as great as the great Mr. Issigonis might have wanted, the cars you mention were at least comparable with the European competition. The 1100 sold well all over Europe. The Maxi had a 5 speed 'box before most other cars, and a modern OHC engine years before the ordinary Dagenham Dustbin.
In contrast, those banger-racing Austins were outdated at launch- drum brakes on the front, cart springs at the back ffs. Look at the scans up there^- engine lifting hooks were supplied and fitted as standard, and shown in the brochure LOL. How are you going to sell into countries with a proud engineering history, like Italy, by advertising engine-out maintenance?
When the 1100/1300 was current I was asked whether somebody should buy an ■■■■■■ instead of a 1300. I replied that if you wanted something that looked flash, with bright colours and chrome, take the Ford. If you wanted good engineering and comfort take the 1300. I believe that was valid comment. I also drive one of the very first Maxis (on areasonably long trip, London.Bristol and return, and loved it apart from the cable (I believe it was) gear shift mechanism. It was not smooth but I thought it might simply need wearing in. I agree about the Cambridges etc. except for the Rolls- engined Van Den Plas Princess R. I loved that.

I like how in the Austin leaflet it states ‘that it is impossible to lock your keys in the ignition’ because I managed it with mine…twice!Luckily you could force the front quarterlights open very easily and reach inside. It had crossply ‘town and country’ tyres on the rear when I bought it, absolutely hopeless on wet roads but good in mud etc. One day back in 1970 I had my brother as a passenger, he would have been about eight years of age, and I was going round an island on a housing estate in Reading in the wet on a concrete road and managed to turn the car around in a full 360 degree circle! Two coppers were sitting across the road in their Panda car and they just clapped their hands applauding me. My brother said “wow, again please Pete” and I told him “not on your life lad” and carried on rather sheepishly!
Mine was the later 1622 cc A60 version, the one in the brochure is the earlier A55.
Pete.
Locked your keys in twice, classic Pete ! Can you imagine the coppers doing that today !

Hi DeanThe Cambridge brochure must have been an export model as it is LHD. Any idea which country it was aimed at.
Not sure if it is my eyes or I have one too many cans but is the body up half a ram on the Copes DaF■■?
Tyneside
I think it was a general brochure “tyneside” as at the bottom of the back page there is a bit about export availability. Leyland were still a world powerhouse in the 50’s/60’s
when you see where they exported trucks around the world, bit like Bedford.

Tyneside
Not all the pics are LHD though, the front view and the dash panel are RHD. They were brilliant cars, very simple and cheap to maintain and comfortable to drive. The BMC J4 van was mechanically the same, and the MGB was similar mechanically in many ways as well. I had an Austin first when I passed my test and then later bought a three year old Morris Oxford series six from the BMC dealership I worked at. Until I got married I was travelling 400 miles each weekend for eighteen months visiting my fiancee. Neither ever let me down but alas the ‘metal moth’ got to the Oxford eventually and I sold it and bought a 1974 Vauxhall VX4/90 and then two Cortinas…oh dear!
Pete.
I was only a kid when my uncle had one Pete but i thought they looked a smart car and it seemed to go ok from what i can remember. 400 miles each weekend…

It all depends on your age Dean , I send for the son or grandson for tech problems .
The Carter trailer setup looks good, in practice the loading/unloading of the top deck took a while via electric screw lift, see the main rear pillar cage. Carter had some good strong lightweight designs and at times stretched ministry regs beyond the allowable.
Doing a grand job again Dean .
