Can anyone make out the Reg on Ewins & Sons F88 on page 18, it looks to me like one I owned back in the early 80’s…FBT 219L, but can’t just make it out.I used to drive FBT 219L in 1977/78 I ran to the Middle East in it for Redcliffe Roadways , mainly fridge work, it belonged to Malcolm Watson from Mansfield he also had an F89 which he drove himself, I did quite a few trouble free miles in her traveling a few times to Kuwait, Doha, Saudi and Iraq.
Here they both are in southern Turkey, FBT 219L is the chrome grill one on the right.
Steve
Great photo Steve, sounds like that F88 had a hard life chap !

The silver grill was 230 bhp the small black plastic was 240 bhp from my recollection.

The bottom Atkinson in your last post was a Darley Dale motor, there were two with consecutive reg numbers I drove one of them , in the picture it looks like 409 M or N there was 409 and 410. That COULD even be me driving!!!
Steve
My old close neighbour the late Gordon Oliver drove for Hoyles at Darley (again a former Tofts driver) and later he had a Seddon four wheeler running from Friden brickworks to Sheffield until his retirement. At one time he drove a Morris Commercial for Derbyshire Stone and carting tarmac to Rotherham one Sunday he stopped at a set of traffic lights and somehow managed to knock the pto into gear! He set off with the body slowly raising, and tar dripping out onto the road. A young copper on the pavement was soon on the scene and got his notebook out, however an older Inspector arrived by car and assessed the situation. “You didn’t mean to do it did you driver?” and Gordon said no. “Right then lad (to the copper) put that book away and get a shovel from my car boot, you and the driver will soon have this soon have this cleared up” and no more was heard about it!
A grand chap was Gordon, (unless you upset him!) but never try to match him for drink at the bar in the Midland Hotel, Matlock Bath, as you would be incapable of walking home!
Pete.

No John, before those came out. It was one of the early fifties FVO models with the Saurer engine and suicide cab doors, they had lots of them. I still have a workshop manual for those Saurer engines!

Morning Steve,
The silver grill F88’s were mainly 235 bhp (240) like you say, although from my records it would appear that the very first
ones were 260 bhp which i believe was the same as the ones sold in Europe. The first F88’s were imported and sold by
Jim McKelvie in 1968.
Click on twice.
The black grill’s were introduced in 1973.

The sackloaders were fairly common at one time, I remember one company having them fitted to all their lorries but the drivers rarely used them as most of their work was loading bags from mills where they came down a shute.
Pete.
Hi Dean.
I’m not sure where Barraclough’s yard was but they did a lot of pipes out of Hepworths near Holmfirth.Wagon has a JX 'uddersfield plate.
