Hi John,
Didn’t H & B Skewen become DT Hunkin later in the 90s ?

Hi mark, no h&b were different,d t hunkin was based in pontrydyfryn my old school friend I grew up with married hunkins daughter hunkins been around a while they mostly on scrap ,h& b were steel hauliers reg and Len were the two who had the fodens and they had a fitter you might know him I will try and find out his name

Phone numbers on doors? :open_mouth: Blimey, at our quarry very few hauliers put their name on their truck, let alone a phone number! Running incognito was best, not so easily traceable when shooting through weight limits or being where you shouldn’t really be!

Regarding stockpiling chassis, Barlow and Hodgkinson at Biggin, Derbys, kept many Foden chassis in their yard for years before registering, painting and bodying them. Being a Foden agency we used them at Tilcon for parts as they were only twenty minutes away and if they had nothing in stock (such as a brake cam etc) then you were asked to come back in an hour or so while they stripped one from a new chassis/cab, usually with a covering of rust on it from standing! Rumour was that when Fodens with Gardner engines were in short supply they bought Rolls engined ones and took the engine out and sold it, then fitted the old Gardner from the chassis being sold off but I’m not sure if that is actually true! Dave (Rigsby) might know better?

Pete.

The Yellow Scania 81, belonged to A H Gifford, I believe they were from the Tonyrefail are of South Wales, they also had a V reg 8 wheeler DAF 2300, the business operated from the yard of haulier Henry Jenkins, of Beddau, Pontypridd, I remember they replaced the Scania in 1984, with a T Reg Ex Courage Volvo F10.

The MAN which you ask if anybody recognises EU61HJE is pulling an interbrew trailer. It belonged to MAN UK and at that time was on permanent loan to Interbrew (now ABInbev) Samlesbury brewery. At the time they had 20 Mans on contract hire all double shifted and to be available 24/7 to achieve this the contract included an older spare unit which was only supposed to be used when one of their fleet was of for service or repair. Whilst the 20 new ones had Man’s brilliant comfort shift on a manual 16 speed Ecosplit, that had an early version 1 AStronic, not good, really not good.

Pete.

It wouldn’t surprise me Pete , some of the tank blowers were on their 3rd life when we got them , one of the quicklime tanks was so rotten the fitter poked a hole in the chassis with a broom handle .

Happy new year to all on here 2019 is trucking on near

gingerfold:
Looks like Turners Iveco.

And here is P930 YTL when it was new. It was part of Turner’s new European Division, which grew to about 14 trucks. It lasted about two years before the European venture was shut down. The Iveco and other trucks used on European work were spread around various company depots.
