Is that a sleeper pod on the top of that Albion.?
That motor must have been the 60s equivalent of a blinged up Topliner in it’s day.

I used to envy those guys who drove the Bedford Marsden vans, with all the living space in the cab, behind and above them…far better than sleeping across the seats, or parcel shelf of a TK anyway.

Thanks for the name Ray.

Retired Old ■■■■:
And the blue & yellow F88 looks suspiciously like Clive Price, although not as smart as his usual lorries.

Van Bentum DAF. Remember reading about this fella he was a clever bloke and made his own tankers
which were extremely light.
More great pics DEANB, Henk van Bentum didn’t actually build his own silos, but he did design his own and had them built, if memory serves I think it could have been by Atcomex, this would have been in 1998/9. They were extremely light having no chassis, to tip they had three huge rams one either side also serving as landing legs and a big foot at the back in the centre. The legs were dropped to the floor taking the weihht, the driver then uncouoled the trailer moving the unit forwards only about six inches, the hydraulic and air jump pipe were all extremely long to make up for there being no chassis, the silo then tipped on the front legs pivoting on the back foot. They proved to be very unstable with several falling over whilst tipping, and were very soon withdrawn from service, all very expensive I’m sure. The trailer in the picture is also an Atcomex, but a more conventional design. Now the flat trailers which he designed several years previously were much more successful and also very light, using a frame best described as being of a bridge type design, or more unkindly as scaffolding.

Thanks for your comments “acd1202” about Bentum. Do you know if they have packed up now as i havent seen
one for years ■■ He used to run a very smart fleet.

I would imagine that it was a sleeper up top. I was looking at that pic and wondered how you coupled up ■■
The trailer is so close to the back of the cab ? Also looks a pain if you had to change a wheel ■■ :unamused:

hi Dean,
That ERF had a rare (thank god) turbo gardner. Was a very troublesome engine and the truck usually got as far as strensham from south wales before overheating.Lloyds were a very old welsh firm, during the late 60’s John and Dai lloyd ran the firm after their father.looks to me, like the late Dai lloyd at the wheel there? though more often than not, that truck was usually driven (when it ran) by Norman Gillard (rip).

I think this was one of the Gardner pre-production trial engines, wasn’t it?

Hi,
I would say that you are right there, afaiaa? tbh,my Gardner knowledge is very limited.Though i recall both the Lloyd bros.constantly mentioning to me how disapointed they were with that particular engine.Lloyd’s had many Gardners in ERF do well over a million miles without any major engine work needed.
regards Andrew.

The Turbo Gardner’s we ran gave us very little trouble the only failures we had was with the water pumps if they weren’t regularly greased
They tended to fail and with a good driver who could stop the engine quickly very little damage was done
If seizure did occur it always seemed to be number one piston that picked up

Here’s XRR 252Y when about a year old and then still going strong in the later blue livery some 13 years later also just in the background is B556 HAL one of the many ERFs and Seddon Atkinson’s that gave over 10 years plus service
Happy memories cheers Gary
