good morning Dean,
The D.S.Davies Bedford TM on the cover of CM, is a welsh motor,Tbh i’m not sure about the other two atki’s you asked about? The R&D Marathon looks new to me, excellent shots yet again, thanks for sharing.BTW,the Rover you mentioned, the P6 was imo a great car,my father had two V8’s new over the years when i was a kid, they went like the wind, the engine was a Buick design? later replaced by the SD1 or SDi,They suffered from dreadfull non existent quality control issues and by that point the old man had started buying Volvo’s.
regards Andrew.

Morning dean ,the acme Bedford was the same cab and box all removal firms had ,behind the seats was a parcel shelf as we called them you could sleep on it but sideways only  that’s why a lot of drivers slept on the furniture in the back of the vans ,they were good motors Jones still used them in the 80,s and 90,s from having them new cheers John

Some great photos there , I delivered glass weekly to a mill in Greenfield and remember the bend near the station. I also remember Pennine Lad , that was always around Huddersfield. I bet the 500 ERF took a few by surprise up windy hill

I used to negotiate that hairpin bend quite regularly with an extended trombone trailer. Can’t count the number of times I had to stop because some prat kept coming through despite the ever-decreasing gap!

Going back to the day cabbed Barrett’s SA 401
A358 CVO at Stirlands we had a A357 CVO fitted with a Gardner Turbo

That looks suspiciously like a Motor Panels cab! Robert

Stonefield were built or had some tie in with Volvo Ailsa trucks IIRC. We had 2 where i served my time, they were 4x4 design for off road use the one in the picture was being used the same as ours for pulling drillings rigs for sampling. They were a desaign to compete with the likes of Unimog and Land Rover. The engine was the V6 Ford Essex 3.0 petrol engine from out of the Granadas etc.
with an auto matic gearbox. I think a few fire brigades around the country bought some for more remote areas.

Stonefield.JPGThe Stonefield saga is a long one which left a sour taste for the people who once worked there.

Stonefield Vehicles was founded by the late Jim McKelvie, who was instrumental in launching Volvo commercial vehicles in Great Britain.
When Volvo Sweden wouldn’t bring in the Volvo Laplander to Britain he decided to build a competitor and Stonefield was born.
They produced a variety of off road and utility vehicles including the pickup version which used the Ferguson four wheel-drive transmission system powered by a three litre Ford V6 petrol engine along with more powerful seven-seater personnel carrier with bodywork by Reeves Burgess.

On 6 February 1978 Stonefield Vehicles was taken over by the Scottish Development Association following the death Jim McKelvie who had originally started the company.
The vehicles they produced were quickly recognised as a world-beating, cross-country truck. Its reputation was developing rapidly and the SDA’s confidence in it was so great that a new factory extension was built capable of producing over 2,000 vehicles per year.
In August 1980 Stonefield went into receivership after the Scottish Government refused to continue financing the project.
Then came along Abdul Shamji, whose Gomba Holdings group took over the Ayrshire-based Stonefield truck project in 1981 after paying just ÂŁ350,000 for the company.

This all ended when Abdul Shamji was jailed for 15 months for committing perjury in February 1986 and as the judge put it “Lying like a trooper” about his wealth. Prison for millionaire.

Thanks for the comments Andrew ! Yes that’s the rover SD1 ! They were unreliable and i can remember
seeing a fair few on the ard shoulder. Must have done huge damage to the Rover brand as the P6 were
a good car. The D.S.Davies bedford was a smart looking motor !
