PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

ERF-NGC-European:
ERF experimented with an 8-wheeler A-series but didn’t make any. I think what people forget is that during, and well into, the mid-'70s and even beyond, ERF were making several different models all at the same time (overlapping each other’s production runs). The A-series tractor units, older-design LV-cabbed rigids and units, B-series, all the metal-cabbed models (like the NGCs, MGCs, MDCs etc) were all rolling off the production line. Robert

I agree with that comment Robert, as alot of manufacturers seem to often pop on a part that was
normally either on another model or a newer model. A typical example is the F88,often i see pics
with a 290bhp having a 240bhp air stack up the back of the cab,or a 240 with a 290 grill. I think it
was a case with alot of manufacturers that if they run out of one part like an indicator, grill etc
they would just pop another one on off a similar model. As long as it was not going to affect the
way the truck operated, they are not going to stop the production line, made perfect sense.

moomooland:
Reed AEC Mercury think the Reg No should be SKO 511H.
Publicity companies had a habit of airbrushing number plates on adverts in those days, so the picture would not become dated to quick.

Good point Paul, never gave airbrushing number plates out a thought until i read that, makes sense ! :sunglasses:

ERF-NGC-European:
Couple of P-reg ERFs, so could have been new in '76, just before the R-reg came out. Robert

We used to service and repair Marrs fleet of BMC FG’s based at Hook, Hants, when I worked in Reading back in the early 70’s. Garage reeked of fish for days! Changed a spring on a Foden S36 of theirs as well once.

Pete.

Some crackers have appeared just recently Deano pal. More power to your elbow sonny! :sunglasses:

The pic of Dave Hulme’s ERF was a long way from home as he usually carted aggregates from Peakstone quarry at Dove Holes to Pioneer concrete at Chadderton and other depots. The one I meant is reproduced along with another of Hulmes tipping at Chadderton back in the day.

Cheers “BonkeyDollocks” nice pic chap !

Good on ya Stanbo! That was taken by the late Colin Wright in Tunstead quarry May 1981. I remember speaking to him about it and he told me he drove straight into the quarry and parked near the road stone weighbridge. He then spoke to the lad on the outbridge about taking photographs of the lorries and the bloke told him ‘as long as he didn’t get run over, it’d be alright!’ :open_mouth:  Just try doing that today! :unamused:

Indeed Dean me ole mucker. It’s an education in the nicest possible sense. There’s companies I remember seeing as a kid I’d totally forgot about and seeing the lorries takes you down memory lane. That’s what’s so good about the photos. I’m so frickin’ glad people like Paul had the foresight to take all the pics when the rest of us were just happy to see the wagons flying past!

Anyone recognise the Marathon tanker ■■?

A01754.JPG

This LV cabbed ERF was new to the Burmah group in 1970, it was stored until 1972 then allocated to Castrol. Hence the “L” suffix, myself and Iain Wilkinson (who still owns it) acquired it for preservation in 1990. The tractor was painted in 1993 approx. it still looks good today.

This old motor would have belonged to Meachers transport, Southampton. Still going strong to day using MAN since the demise of ERF and thier dealership ( KL Commercials) Harvey

Chris Webb:
Anyone recognise the Marathon tanker ■■?

0

The Marathon tanker with a JP Warrington reg is pulling a load of Hydrochloric Acid and I would hazard a guess at it being one of Runcorn Transport Services (RTS),or maybe an owner driver working for them, the standard livery was dark green. They had several Marathons and tri-axle trailers.I’m open to other suggestions though as usual

The Calor Atkinson is a strange one a mark one cab on an N reg which would be Mark 2 Borderer era, wonder what the story is behind that?
