Those TLs in that scrapyard… I remember delivering to Bedfords when they wete developing those TLs from TKs.

I was driving a little Fiat 130 4 wheeler rigid at the time as a young lad, and a couple of guys in suits came up to me and asked if they could look in my cab, paying attention to how the felt headlining boards were fixed in…the guy said to his mate… ‘‘Hey that is a good idea how Fiat have done that’’ and they took a pic…polaroid instant in those days.:grin:

I often wondered if they copied the design on production…if so I can take credit for it.:joy:

Yes, I used to watch some of his old bus videos, he must be knocking on a bit by now.

Why didn’t you tell them to make the parcel shelf into a bunk while you were there? :roll_eyes: Would’ve saved my poor back a lot of pain. No consideration some people :wink: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

TBF the TL was a lot better than the TK (a low bar, but all the same). Not quite the the leap Ford did from D-series to Cargo, but progress all the same.

I never had a TL but didn’t they even spoil the parcel shelf by splitting it into sections, or have I got that wrong.

So lucky, 99 times out o 100 you’d be in the field.

The only (and last) time I ever took a day-cabbed artic abroad was a TL and I had to sleep on the parcel shelf, so it must have been intact.

That BMC brings back memories, my Dad had one from new, also a ‘C’ plate 66.
Travelled miles with him as a very young kid in that, and Commers, Albions, and Bedfords…all ancient even to him when he drove them, at least one Albion a converted 6 wheeler with poor brakes was a death trap.

The later ones were fitted with sections.

How’s this for an old family shot “ramone” just to take your mind of Tetley’s beer !:wink: The well dressed chap on the left was my maternal Great Grandfather Thomas Bewick and the chap stood next to him was his Son John and I was told by my Great Aunt Dora ( one of Thomas’s two daughters the other one was my Grandmother Sarah) that the bloke on the right was the foreman on the firm. Thomas ran as many as ten of those steamers which he paid for on collection from Fodens at Elworth a £1000 a time with Sovereigns from his money belt ! He eventually changed over to running Halley petrol motors. As well as Furniture removers all over the UK they were also General Carriers.

That’s a great shot i have a photo of my grandma and grandad stood in front of a Leyland RAF he drove for Longs where he started on horse n carts.I love these old photos of the stuff the old drivers drove.I have no intetest whatsoever in the motors today .My dad talked about the steamers that ran around Liverpool .Great shot

On YT there’s any amount of cine footage of blokes doing the ME run in the '70s. This is one of the trips Chapman & Ball (S-o-T) did:

Well there’s an odd combination. Why the KW? “Burda” and “moden” (“fashion” in English) rang a faint bell; turns out they also made dress-making patterns and then I remembered that one of my aunties was a dab-hand home dress-maker.

Think that kw was owned by york trailers in the uk, does seem an odd choice of unit,

We went to a place quite a few years back in Darlington called Paton & Baldwins , it was what i can remember a very grand building with grassed areas and park benches for the staff.Very early 20th century looking probably earlier come to think of it.They manufactured knitting yarns and i’m almost certain knitting patterns. The place was being broken up into industrial units at the time and i often wondered what happened to the place. I think they were either Australian or NZ and i think they are still a big concern but i doubt over here. A bit more useless info to bore you with
