Different Slaters.
If you were to ask a Slaters driver about brake fade…“what’s brake fade ? the brake do smell a bit”
Note the ‘greedy boards’ , Peter liked greedy boards…“fill’em up”.
“what do you mean I’m 5 ton overloaded”

That Volvo has been owned by Van ‘t Kruis from new, they only take it out to shows and runs nowadays though.

This Scania A-frame drawbar was another classic that they had. Went on the road in ‘94 or ‘95 and covered more than 2 million clicks until it was written off in a accident just a couple of years ago. They definitely got their money’s worth out of that one!

As an unashamed anorak, the first thing I noticed about that picture was the untidy arrangement of cardboard on the radiator grille of that Mark 5 AEC Mammoth Major 8.

Then I noticed the girls….

What exactly happened here? Is that a regular unloading, or some mishap due to poor roping?

Picked the photo up from F/B. Not sure what happened but it would be lucky if no pedestrian was hit. Reels of paper I think.
Wonder what the response from the police etc would be nowadays. Close the entire town centre down, fleet of ambulances and the fire service to hose the road down at minimum.

It would not have happened today as H & S at the loading point would have made sure it was secured properly before the journey began :face_with_monocle: :+1:

As the driver would have been wearing hi-viz, safety glasses and a hard hat, while he secured it.

Obviously the tarp wasn’t rated for the load it was supposed to be securing.

Strikes me those are all quite narrow reels of paper(?) being stacked up.
If there is any gaps at all then it would not take much for the upper layers to work down and separate the lower layers. Then the whole load would become unstable.
If say 5 or 6 reels were wrapped together, it would be much more stable.

Alan Firmin was/is a haulier, but was he a farmer too? I have in my brain a little ditty I picked up from somewhere ‘Farmer Firmin’s Fine Apples’. Is there a connection?

This lot must hold a record for having one of the most varied and unusual fleets in Britain!
