Yes, that’s what I assumed too. Rebuilt or heavily modified vehicles have to be re-registered. Since 1983 such vehicles have carried Q-plates, but prior to that I think they were re-registered with the year of conversion.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a “Q” plate - I didn’t think it was still a thing. About 10 years ago I was down seeing one of my customers in Cornwall and he was talking to me about some additions to his fleet that he had got “at a brilliant price”. They were ex MOD Dennis Javelin’s and were on 03 plates. He would be using them on school contracts were part of the contract was that they vehicles provided had to be less than 15 years old. I took one look at them and told him that these coaches had been built before 1994 as I could tell from the bodywork on them so they were already older than 15 years. We looked at the chassis numbers and yes, that’s when they were built. They had been operating overseas and returned to the UK when the bases were closed in the early part of the century - how they came to be registered with those plates is a mystery to me. To be fair to the operator he just shrugged his shoulders and said “as far as the council are concerned they are less than 15 years old - that’s all I care about”.

Not sure how he got away with the “missing” sheet but Maurice Hill are still about.They were regulars at Trinity Paper Mills in the ‘70s.

The cars are Standard Eights. The transporter has a Perkins engine according to the badge, but I wonder what make the lorry is. Something with a non-standard cab, it would appear.

It looks a bit Austinish. Were Standard/Vanguard tied up with any commercial vehicle purveyor?

The Triumph group had taken over by then, judging by the Triumph name on the headboard and trailer. I agree that it looks very Austin-ish.

How about Bedford. Looks like a Griffen badge above the grill.

Or second thoughts what about Vulcan, they used Perkins engines and were part of the Rootes group.
