Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

Sutton Bridge?

What it reminds me of is a budget version of the Ergo cab - same silly wipers, the dip in the side windows, the same Lucas(?) indicators, the wheel arch. Perhaps it’s just me.

To be fair, most wipers were top-mounted then - even F88 wipers were just migrating to the bottom of the screen at that time. The wheel arch is only exposed because it’s the narrow version of that Motor Panels cab. And as for the dip in the side windows: that’s the quarterlight, which you could open a tad to let in fresh air or to flick your ash out of - I still miss quarter lights!

Top mounted wipers are still used even today on buses at least.

They forgot to put in the ad “are you less than 5’2” tall”

We had an electric regroover used it many times.

A new Atki probably one of the last supplied by J W Graham Ltd of Bass Lake ( Embleton) before Scotts of Nottingham opened the new Atki dealership in Penrith. Colin Lee ( J C Lee) was primarily a Coal Merchant and once de licencing took place in 1970 he used to load Pig Iron from Workington Steel for Yorkshire as a subby to Grahams who were the main contractor to British Steel at Workington. Then Colin Lee’s tippers returned from Yorkshire with household coal for West Cumbria. J W Grahams tippers did similar work and then subbed loads of coal off Colin Lee back to W.Cumbria. I remember that Colin Lee and Maurice ( Puzzle) Graham of J W Graham was good Pals with Colin Lee. I believe George Graham left the family firm around this time to start up Graham Commercials in Carlisle in conjunction with Union Trucks of Newcastle upon Tyne.. Graham Commercials subsequently became Scania dealers in their own right and have become over the years a very successful operation second only I would say to Keltruck.

I perfectly remeber regrooving the tyres of my Mercedes O302 bus 40 years ago. This could be done only once.

Spotted today in Devon.

It’s amazing how that old trucks you used to see everyday, now look so small to how you remember them
