Time for an “oldie but goldie” maybe?
“Welcome to the Brexit, sir!”
The car division of DAF was financially struggling and were looking for a partner, Volvo stepped in because they didn’t had any models at the smaller end of the spectrum. And they thought that the Variomatic gearbox would be a great selling point to their customers.
And although the 343 model (which was designed by DAF) wasn’t the most sexy model money could buy, it sold good enough. Even the Dutch police force had 340s in their fleet at some point. Both the 340 and 360 models are now thin on the ground, unlike the bigger Volvo’s.
The princible of the Variomatic gearbox is still being used to this day, although it’s called CVT gearbox now.
Love the 2nd pic, caught speeding, ‘sorry officer, I put the key in the wrong ignition’.
There’s one or two for sale on ebay 343/5 the 360 with the 2 litre Volvo engine would have been the better if a bad bunch.Didn’t the 343 have a Renault engine ?
Does that 2nd one bring back memories Buzzer???
Only the 2.0 was a Volvo engine, the 1.4 and 1.7 were both Renault units, in fact the DAF 66 was also a Renault unit.
Yeah the 2.0 litre ones were 360s
I thought the 360 had the B23, a 2.3 litre engine.
Over here the 360s were Volvo 2.0 litre petrols they may well have put the 2.3s in for other countries. There was the GLS basic i think GLE posh one and GLT sports version
Blood y Jag drivers
I think that shot is at 46 berth Tilbury in the mid 70’s waiting to load woodpulp for Milnthorpe and two of those artics were Gravesend based Shunters .
Oi, have a care sir with wild remarks like that, some of us Jaguar drivers have a very sensitive nature.
And slender wallets (allegedly)
PS I didn’t know you could fold a SEPECAT Jaguar’s wings like that.
Assuming that this wagon had a normal shelf life McBean must have been one of a very few hauliers that continued to run 8 wheelers on general haulage into the 90’s.
