Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

I drove a Foden S106 with Cummins 320 and 9-sp Fuller, but rarely. When I said ‘irritating’ I didn’t mean the 'box was problematic in itself, it was just the strange way the lever bowed outwards on its travel between changes (presumably following the disc round which the cable was positioned). The truth is that I should have gained more Foden experience before making what appears to have been a premature judgement! Thank you and ramone for enlightening me.

Thanks for posting that film. I thought it was fair, balanced, well-researched and bull-■■■■ free. The single ‘fact’ I would dispute though, is that synchro boxes meant better journey times :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

A point that made me doubt the entire video. I have limited experience with the little bubble and none with the Guy.

I drove both but in both cases they were yard shunters!

No worries. I had a problem with Fodens 12 speed box, I was never able to master it, I tried, god I tried, but I could never get it right.
And now we’ll get somebody who used them regularly saying " what a t it" :joy:

What was the difference? A different shifting patern? Not taking the mick, just being curious, as these 'boxes were out of fashion when I first started.

Some say I’m still wet behind the ears you see…

Shift pattern was exactly the same. The only difference was the sensation of shifting imparted by the cable-change arrangement on the Foden. Instead of the stick moving directly in a straight line from 1st to 2nd (for example), it moved in a shallow arc. Also, if the cables were not kept lubricated or they were not changed often enough they got sticky or in extremis jammed up.

As in many things it’s all in the lubrication

Is this the one that pulled for Bernard Mathews in the 80s/90s?

Ta for explaining. I recognise the cable change thing, whilst the FH mkI had connecting rods (and went like a warm knife through butter) for some reason with the FH mkII they opted for cables. Especially after a certain amount of miles, the cables were a bit sloppy, thus resulting in less smooth gear changes.

No, different reg. Here are two Matthews Atkis with modified cabs:

Nice looking wagons, always was a Mark 2 fan, is the 2nd one a top sleeper or just fairing?

Probably just fairing. Can’t see any windows.

Very tidy-looking, if only Carl (Williams) were here he’d tell us who built the bodywork, who ran it etc.

A double-deck articulated trolleybus: now that’s novel!

Just looking at the Ford production line photo I posted. Did not notice the Trader with the bonnet. Appears to be no roof on the cab.
Anybody a clue what application it could be used for, maybe a an Integral box van ???
