Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

First shot is one I took at Kutsford Services M6 southbound one Sunday afternoon my D1000 was parked out of shot.
The Scania is loaded with waste trim at a Rexam packaging plant the driver is Ivan Allen.

That tarp looks a bit threadbare, Dennis.

On one of the occasions I met Peter Foden he told me that the best support " You Hauliers" can give ERF is to specify either a Cummins or a RR engine. This was at the time that ERF were building about 3000 chassis per year with 1000 Gardners, 500RR and 1500 Cummins. I relied that “Us Hauliers” had to make a profit which was hard enough running Cummins and ■■■■■■■ impossible running RR ! The only ERF chassis I was interested in at that time was the 240LXB and the later 265LXC. The last ERF’s I bought was in mid 1982 all with the LXC 265 engine Fuller 9509 box and the Eaton single speed axle.Scania had become the backbone of the BTS by 1982 but I had weakened a tad and bought a few ERF’s

It’s a net not a tarp.Waste paper and cardboard were sold on weight so it wasn’t in the interest of the seller to keep the bales dry.Or that’s how it worked when my dad was on the job

You’d be surprised how dry those nets kept the loads and IIRC they were weighed out at the Rexam and Bowater plants so the ticket had the dry weight on it.

The trees have come on a bit and a few mods done to the houses.

I knew that, mate. I was taking a friendly pop at Dennis, hence the wink. Obviously I need better quality bait, to get a bite.

I picked up two young Polish ladies hitching near Irun… We ended up together for nearly 2 weeks.
France > Spain> Lisbon clear and tip. > Porto load and clear> Cherbourg for trailer swop> Swiss multi drop> Munich, where we parted ways. Kept in contact by letter for a while, mobile phones were rare and expensive especially international calls, but it fizzled out. Cramped in an F10 but it was fun.

Yes you’re right but I thought I had,

I was only nine when Freemans took delivery of the Dodge, they used to share a yard on Heath Road, Leighton Buzzard with Alf Styles Livestock Haulage, that picture was taken when the lorry was parked outside on the road possibly waiting for the cattle trucks to finish washing out before reversing in.

The P reg 88 must have had a bit of an odd cab fitted to it, if I remember correctly they moved the wipers to the lower panel in about 74/75, I wonder if they were still the Air operated ones as well

Mr Dunbar, I hope he’s fit and well and still imbibing.

The fella on the rope is putting his back into the job, if it slips he’s going to damage his back

Yep, always used to have the back leg ready to take the strain just in case summat gave way or slipped.

I did not act so wisely when arranging a sheet on top of a load once…I should have taken grip on the sheet itself, not the sheet tie. With nowhere safe to fall back on when the tie snapped I fell back about 12ft to the ground.
Fortunately my training as a black belt in Kung-Ninja-ate saved the day and the damage was not bad. (no sense, no feeling)
