Thanks for the kind comments “daleman” but the Bewick thread had deteriorated into just a lot of banter so I decided to pull the plug on it . However which part of the UK are you from ? Regards Dennis.
Onward / Ackworth Transport had a depot at Birtley behind the A1 M services. IIRC the drums were Castrol products.
Originally from Rochdale so I remember your work there (Makins) and the demolished hairdressers.
Fully understand why you pulled the thread but thanks for putting it up there for a while.
:Hiya daleman now the Hairdressers episode was a nightmare and I was only glad it was at 6am and not later in the day ! The incident was down to the stupidity of the Driver and not Bewick Transport . But no one was hurt so all was well that ended well . Cheers.
Happily I am sure that SDU took my joke in the way that it was intended, he knows of my love for Australia.
Carryfast struggling with the syncro 'box?
Are they Mazda R100 coupes?
Ah, but the person who took the photo did not show all of the crawlers in front of the 86, and I hardly think that 8 cars would have troubled it much even on that terrain.
If those car transporters were tipping ME, then would they have loaded some general cargo, such as heavy pallets for the return trip? Long way to go back empty.
I do remember UK hauliers loading palletised wine in livestock carries after tipping France or Spain. Special bodies are useful, but can still be used for other things.
I don’t think we got any of those Lancia Betas, they may have sent some, but they rusted away before arrival.
Lancias and other Italian cars of the 70’s certainly had a reputation for rust, and poor electrics.
I went to buy a Fiat 124 Coupe and was impressed with the sprung driver’s seat. Until I realised it was the floor bending as I sat in it.
I didn’t buy it.
Much later I saw a pretty red Lancia Beta targa top for sale. Again as rotten as a pear.
I don’t mind a good pair.
I think you’re right (but it is a blurry photo).
One of my favourite cars is the Alfasud - quirky (and very skewed in RHD) but a brilliant thing to drive. Even in Australia they rust for fun but I still want one.
Strewth, get the Australians involved and the standard/tone of the conversation plummets. On the other hand, Us UK correspondents are slightly more sophisticated and refined. Take for example…our hero, he’s right up there with refinement and sophistication.
Don’t get him started on Bristols GOM.
MFP ran livestock trailers that had curtains stowed in the bulkhead and used for backloads of vino ect.Very heavy tare weight though.
Yep. That is who was thinking of, but couldn’t remember the name.
