Shhhhh! Donât mention the âDâ word, weâll have the Leatherhead branch of the âappreciation societyâ polluting this fine thread, with reams of technical drivel heâs cloned from the ether.
. Merry Christmas to all.

When they were shifting any weight over 100 ton,and pulling hard, those DDâs had a lovely tone to them,I reacted the same way when I heard a Spitfires Merlin,or better still,a pair of Merlinâs in a Mosquito.

Peter Schöler has kindly let me share from his considerable collection of photos taken at truck shows in Europe.

Thatâs a cracking picture of Asian Transportâs AEC ^^^ Buzzer. Looks as if itâs just disembarking from the Bosphorous ferry in Istanbul. Robert

I always said that if the sound of 4 Merlins singing in unison did not raise the hairs on the back of your neck, then your

Youre not wrong there we get the Spitfires & Lancaster flying over head en route to Bournemouth airshow this year & I could get out in the garden fast enough, It is a sound you canât get enough of, just like a V8!!!
Jeremy
I was lucky enough to hear one of these HHTs as well. !
Hi, Folks , Did TREVOR RATCLIFF ever have any thing to do with Transam Ttucking ? Cheers Barry Waddy

Not all Lancâs benefited from Merlinâs,some had the Bristol Hercules engine fitted, but not a patch on the RR,but they couldânt make them fast enough(by numbers),so the Hercules was used,a poor relation too!
David
I think the mk 3 lancs with the Hercules were mainly Canadian squadrons , who also had the brains to put 2x50 calibre in the rear turrets instead of the puny 303s

Didnât the 4th one had a CAT engine under the bonnet?
The mention of WW2 planes takes me back to 1943ish and my dad and I on many a dark evening sitting on the back step listing to the bombing on Aberdeen 30 odd miles away and once hearing a plane above us âthatâs a Heinkel bomberâ my dad said, a very distinctive sound thatâs stayed with me to this day. The blackout, the gas masks, the Home Guard, the LDV and sitting listening to an accumulator battery powered Cossor radio with the sometime crackly signal coming and going all part of my young years. We were schooled in preparation for the worst, fortunately it didnât happen in rural Aberdeenshire.
