And another seddon atkinson.

Hi matt watson thanks for the pics  I had 2½ years bus driving, late 1950s at W Alexander and Sons depot in Grangemouth, I had some good buddies there, great memories. Digs in Central Ave and watering hole The Elwyn

Hi oiltreader, I know the Elwyn, some good pubs in Grangemouth. The depot these tankers were based in is now an Asda as is the shell petroleum yard as they say all good things come to an end, I dont think there is a bus depot in grangemouth now nearest is larbert or bannockburn.

The bus garage was on Abbots Rd near the jct with Orchard St and next door to the then Co-op Soap Works, mostly women who worked in the soapworks, never short of soap if you knew someone who worked there, they used to bring it out in their underwear, talk about droopy drawers  . We had a cracking football team, played 20 won 18 drew 2 during one of the seasons I played, we did our training in Zetland Park which had an open air swimming pool, what a caper that was, fab times.

He has done a few now but I think it is worthy of praise as it almost looks real. The real one being the second picture, it is going to Gaydon if you want to see it Buzzer.

Leyland600:
Hi Larry, as Bewick relates Bells were an old established coal merchants and haulage company in Wigton going back into the early 1930s I guess and by the 1950s run by the three sons. Their livery was a rich blue with black chassis and mudguards the wagons being kept immaculate at all times if possible. As they approached retiring age and the eldest passing away the decision was taken to sell out circa 1974/5 to D.A Harrison of Waverton. Their fleet mostly Chieftains and Leyland Comets with 5 or 6 wagons loaded frequently out of Ranks, Spillers and the Coop at Dunston with animal feed for Wigton area farms or the West ■■■■■■■■■■ Farmers depot. I was fortunate enough to visit Albion Motors at Glasgow as in this Albion as it had to be returned for a warranty job and I was invited to accompany Ernie Bell that day where after completing business we were shown around the repair shops at Yoker including “The Black Museum” where components that had been neglected or abused were exhibited. Then we were taken to the Scotstoun works and briefly shown the assembly shop etc. A great experience as a 14 year old lad. I learned and was taught a lot about road haulage travelling in that Albion which stood me in good stead in later years as a driver then owner operator.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Excellent info L600,as usual ! Did Bells have any outbound loads from W.■■■■■■■ or did they always run empty to load feeding stuffs back from the mills.cheers Bewick.

This odd-looking articulated contraption might be useful to “Oiltreader” if there`s a lot of snow in winter .

Its a basic ( :unamused:   ) Land Rover ,..........but without standard steering or wheels. Oh !.......the rear shell portion has been removed too. :unamused:  The coupled trailer` has a propshaft drive from the front unit, thus enabling “Oiltreader” to travel over
the mountains to collect his shopping and peat for his fire grate.

Thanks for that John, about that era but with the Bedford factory cab, a 1937 model, still going when I finished my apprenticeship in ‘55, tho’ it was a fairly regular visitor to the local garage. With the chained tailgate down loaded and tarped we could move the contents of a 3 bed house. Remember once returning north empty from Edinburgh, boss driving and the winter weather getting worse until the old dear came to halt in a drift somewhere in the county of Angus, this was in the dark, no alternative but to climb in the back and get wrapped up in the packing sheets until daylight, shovel out, also local help, but soon found rad had froze, lack of antifreeze or more like none at all. Good old days :unamused:  yes definitely
This pic a bit similar cabwise.
