Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Hi Gardner 120.
I ran an ERF 66GX six wheeler of this vintage, best wagon I ever owned and operated, reliable and economical. What a shame this old girl was scrapped.

Indeed - the good old days of warm cab (bonnet) in the winter but roasting in the summer

Hi Oily, I was told about this tread when one of our drivers said my lorry was on here on page 115, its taken me this long to look through it all, very good photos and comments. Anyway heres what we picked up from Manchester and took to the south coast when the owner brought them back from Canada.

The Tipping Gear

When we got to the owner put a battery on it and fired it up after about 8 months in storage. He also had this which was a bit of a odd ball Commer I think with bits of Bedford

Both loaded

Cheers Ade

Hi Kevmac, You are quite right, British Rayophane to give the company its second original name (British Newrap originaly) ran an immaculate fleet starting with two Albion Chieftains FT37s, then two LAD cabbed Chieftains. Eventually a lovely ERF KV cabbed 66GX was bought new and driven throughout by my 90 year old neighbour running regularly to Nottingham or Bristol with cellophane paper for cigarette packet wrapping as he had done for many years previously with the 4 Albions. The ERF was eventually bought by W.P. Bell & Sons of Wigton who sold out to D. A Harrison circa 1976 when the Bells brothers retired. There is a photo on TNUK in Harrisons livery. The companyjoine ICI in 1972 to produce polymer film the company being renamed British Sidac. More ERF 54G four wheelers were bought in the 1960s moving on to LV cabbed models including an 8 wheeler.
Cheers Leyland 600.

That’s a handsome machine, get a decent load on that and I’d have a full day with it. Very nice.

VALKYRIE replies:-

The light blue so-called “Commer” 4x4 Lorry is actually almost certainly a World War Two ex-British military Morris-Commercial C8 4x4,either a C8/GS 15 CWT General Service Lorry,or most likely a C8 Field Artillery Tractor MkIII or a C8 Field Artillery Tractor MkIII No.5.
It looks as though it has been fitted with a 1937 to 1952 Morris-Commercial CV/LC Equi-Load Lorry range radiator grille;it also looks as though that it’s original Field Artillery Tractor body has been much modified to get it in to it’s present style and shape and this lorry has
been used as a Breakdown Lorry.
Here are some photographs to show you what I mean:-

Hi, the owner originated in Jersey and emigrated to Canada with the trucks, we took them from Manchester to his house, he said something about it being from 1937 iirc there used to be a jib on it and he used it to lift engines out of boats nearly having it in the drink on one occasion. Thanks for the info Ade

Great lot of pics  thanks to bumper, Leyland600 and VALKYRIE for the detailed Morris Commercial info.

Thanks to Paul Gulliver and bparo2003, a couple of cousins some distance removed.
Oily

Lovely F16 from Finland.

Past these couple of Gordon Gilder’s between between Gloucester & Ross-on-Wye. Anyone got any idea what they are carrying?

Never see fleets like these again

Engine missing, but still salvageable, weren’t many GUY’s on the Removals!

Another total quality restoration by Knowles Transport, lovely

A bit past & present, the DAFs have all gone now, although the Merc’ is still doing 2 runs a week up & down to Dorset/Somerset/Devon/Cornwall with 12-15 drops each trip from Didcot! The Scania’s are now in, that’s me posing by mine on her 1st day out!
