On the many occasions I’ve travelled north on the A9 to Caithness and looked down from the Helmsdale river bridge at Rapson’s garage, thinking one day I will call in and see if I can find the ex Aberdeenshire County Council Mack snowplough power unit which rests there, well yesterday was the day. I asked the " garage fitter" if I could take some photos and during our chinwag I gathered he was Mr Rapson who willingly gave a free hand as it were, with regard to the Mack it had been, re-cabbed from the original canvas top and having seen them working in my youth was able to tell him the orginals were petrol engined, now I read somewhere that they were converted to Leyland diesel engine and was a little surprised to find this one with an AEC engine, the faded AEC plate can be seen on the engine. In his words they used it as a wrecker, with the intention of preservation, but the spare time for such a job never materialised.
Yes I have posted photos of the machine before but they were shared, I have now been in the presence of a legend of times long past, touched it whilst reminiscing and thinking, not the monster I remember as a young lad.

Part two, top pic, the faded AEC plate.

Staying with Rapsons, this Scania wrecker was parked close by.

Still at Rapsons and during our confab, I was told go behind the Daf and you’ll get a shot of the history, behind the Daf at the kerb was a drop into the river, so at great risk and personal sacrifice  not forgetting a non swimmer  .
Oily

I’ve blown up the two larger pics and tho’ I took the photos, the copyright of these two belong to Rapson and Sons and So I am grateful to them for access to part of their history.
