1969 we paid £1700 for a pair of flats in a decent area. 1975 we sold them to make the deposit on a new build semi detached with a garage, the cost? £8200. The downside was the rampant inflation of the late 70s and17% mortgage rate. It nearly broke us. Regards Kev.

And that is a sobering thought with young folk with massive mortgages today on artificially low interest rates.

We bought a new build semi with detached garage, £3250, that was in 1970. Our mortgage was £28 per month, we agonised long and hard as to whether we could afford it.
I was only ever made redundant once (in 1984 after 25 happy years), we used to redundancy money to pay off the mortgage, best thing we ever did.
Times have changed, I have a 22year old grandaughter who is paying rent on a 2 bedroom flat…£6000 per year. :open_mouth:

That’s quite reasonable Gom, the two bed flats opposite us in Matlock are between £1200 and £1500 per month to rent which apparently is the going rate for such properties. Houses tend to be less than that to rent though.

Pete.
