I remember both visiting Wigton mart in the early 1950s.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Leyland Contractor Brambles.jpgPicked this morning on my usual French forum. Wasn’t the Contractor rather a Scammell model?

Note the “dog box” sleeper.

An interesting look back PR, some of those loads in the first one look a bit dodgy. The wagon in the 2nd is an A-double, I don’t think the ‘B’ concept was invented then. I’d have given good money for a ‘dog box’ in the 60s, that bloke was lucky.

A-double it is, thanks.

“Dodgy? Nah mate, just tighten er up a bit, you’ll be right”

AFAIK the “Scammell” badge was ditched in Oz in the '70s and all models were badged ‘Leyland’. I’m no expert btw, if anyone knows better please correct me.

From what I’ve read, it’s probably ex-Australian Army, see

Don’t you mean ‘she’ll be right’ ?

When I wrote my first reply I said ‘The Foden in the 2nd…’ and then looked at your script saying ‘Tancred’s AEC’ and thought you’d got that wrong, so I had another look and now I am not sure. The roo bars don’t help with ID, are you sure it is an AEC? I’ll bow to your judgement if so.

Both marques were very big in The Territory back in the day.

I too thought it was a Foden; it was only when I looked at the comments on that video (references to AV690) that I wrote AEC. All this is way before my time, at nearly 62 I’m a spry yoof :unamused:

Very nice, Oily, I love the way he has greyed out the number plate but not the motto. Best one I ever saw on a truck was also Australian ‘The Wombat, Eats, Roots and leaves’.

Only really works if you know what a wombat is and its diet, and also what the word ‘root’ means in Australian slang.

I believe it was stolen and modified by a lady author called Truss, no not that one. Lyn not Liz. :unamused:

Indeed. “Eats, shoots and leaves”. An interesting book about lack of correct use of commas, apostrophes and grammar in general. A good amusing (really!) read if you wish to brush up on what you were taught at school.

But her ‘theft’ of it is a world away from the Australian original, unless of course you equate ‘punctuation’ with ‘penetration’.
