Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Hi all need help Buzzer. :sunglasses:

0Hi all, this is me and the Smart’s Circus driver after loading hay in 1961. The farm where my dad worked was a hay & straw merchant. :sunglasses:

A nice picture but the driver looks as if he is relaxing after the hard work of roping and sheeting. However, was he really finished? If so I think I would have preferred a good pair of crossovers to stop that front stack landing on the cab roof.

Agreed, a smashing photo. To me he looks as if he would be more at home walking a tightrope than throwing one over a load ■■
Perhaps " BILLY " just grabbed the nearest chap to hand and sent him off to collect the hay ■■
Regards John.

You might have a point there, John, in 1961 he might not even have been a professional driver, no HGV licences or tests in those days, so he could have been a performer given a ‘just nip to’ job.

It might be my old eyes, but I can’t see a single dolly there, it’s as if he had several lengths of rope and just chucked them over Ozzie style, rather than back and forth, but there is some tension so maybe all the dollys are on the other side. Now would a professional have put himself on the offside tying down any more than he needed to?

How much can you remember Gerbil?

Some good 'uns today Oily, the Shippos brings back memories though I always thought they were a deeper red, and that trotter, never seen one back to front like that.

Yea ! bang to rights Buzzer  I never expected that shot to ever be “clocked” as I thought I had bought all the negatives :open_mouth:  But it sure is an interesting shot which I reckon would have been pre WW2 in America they produced all kinds of novelty antics as they were great horsemen in the day ! Cheers Dennis.

Hi all, Buzzer thanks’ for turning the picture, Spardo if you blow the picture up there could be a dolly or something just above the driver’s head and on the 3rd rope there is something just in line with it, could be wrong but not sure the picture is a bit old. :sunglasses:

Yes I agree there is something there on both ropes, not exactly clear what it is though, and even with that bloke looking as tall as he is, it would have been a bit of a reach. Certainly something has tightened it down as could be see by the way it cuts into the bale at the top.

That’s a Jack Ashworth special Buzzer he built his own trailets , apparently he was a great engineer i heard he could make AECs go a bit better than AEC could and there was a tale of him turbocharging a Gardner too not sure these tales are but there is a thread on here about him
