if he upped his rates and stopped working too cheaply he might be able to afford to park his truck
I can afford to park my truck. In fact, now it’s paid for I’ll shortly be parking it up for three months while I spend the Summer swanning around on my narrowboat, which is also paid for.
I am not saying that I agree with the fine (invoice) or that he should be made to pay it. I do think it should not be going as far as the supreme court though. In the grand scale of things that I assume they are in place for, it will look like a trivial matter of some man who doesn’t want to pay a parking charge. Of course that is only on the face of it without viewing it as a precedence for all the other things that could theoretically arise from it
I’ve parked tonight on a road with a sign on saying between 0800 and 1900 1 hour max stay, I parked up after 1900 and I am in a bay, well slightly hanging out in an artic. Will I be ok? Oh I’m in Slough if that helps

I think a definitive test case should go all the way, to the Lords if required, that way the law and it’s interpretation get completely clarified.
How can the court say £85 is reasonable? If the bloke had left on time, someone else would have parked in that slot for a couple of quid. Can’t really see anything more than a tenner as a justified amount to cover the loss
You get two hours, and captain Haddock took it upon himself to take three hours just pay the fine. Why do people like this clown cry foul when they are the transgressors.Wonder what his view would be if a tramp came into his shop in winter and bought a portion of chips then took three hours to eat them in attempt to keep warm.

I’d just Park it on the services for 3 months Harry as a test case and see if it’s still there when you get back

I’d love to see that as well, other side of coin and all that. Bet he’d be after kicking them out ASAP.
Aside from all that I’m interested what the final outcome will be as it will define and maybe clarify any futures of the cowboy clampers

You can chip in towards the cost of Barry Beavis’ supreme court action here indiegogo.com/projects/supr … x/10609161 , in 11 hours the appeal has raised £1,835 towards the target of £6,000.

The issue is the amount he was charged not the fact he was charged…
£3,036 now, so over halfway towards the target of £6,000 after only 14 hours with 30 days left to run.
I’ve chipped in, I would be surprised to see that one or two on here are 100% behind these cowboy rip-off merchants were it not for the fact that I have to share an RDC waiting room with a few of these brain-dead cretins at least once a week.
Should have just paid like you ought to, and so does every other law abiding citizen end of story no thread! Whether you feel it’s right or wrong it is NOT YOUR LAND and you really should pay for the privilege.
If I allowed truck parking on my drive for £5 per night and everyone paid except for harry 2 bob monk I would personally…? take a guess Morally wrong

Yes, basically it’s an issue of consumer protection. Barry Beavis, myself, the AA, the RAC, the Consumers Association and numerous other consumer protection organisations are against the cowboy parking operators and their spurious “fines”, if one or two mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging lorry drivers are in favour of those who would rip them off as soon as look at them then I suppose we just have to accept it.
Just a brief addition, the target of £6,000 has been reached and exceeded (£6,622 as I’m typing and still rising).
To me, this is more than just about an Essex chip shop owner and a parking ticket, allowing private companies to fine people sets a very dangerous precedent as far as we, as consumers are concerned, consumer groups and motoring organisations are quite simply staggered by the Court of Appeal decision which has overturned hundreds of years of consumer protection laws.
Good luck to Barry Beavis at the supreme court from me anyway.

Law abiding citizens or mugs?
Roll over a die, that’s the British spirit
£85 charge. Go on make it £100 infact, why not fine folk a grand, maybe 2 ?
Where do you draw the line of ‘reasonable’ ?
Is £85 really reasonable for over staying in ‘‘free parking’’. ? No its not reasonable, its legalised robbery from parking companies who set out to bully folk into paying.
MSA: signs on the motorways should read ‘‘If your tired take a break’’ (as long as its under 2 hours) - What a ■■■■■■■ joke.
Roll over and die is at present the ENGLISH spirit.Up here in Scotland those zbing zbs have no legal standing whatsoever.I sometimes drive a bus load of school kids down to Perth and park up at the retail park for 2 or 3 hours I always park as far from the actual shops as possible as I dont want to inconvienience customers.I go for a swim and sauna and come back and spend some money on lunch at Morrisons and usually buy bits and pieces while in town.My firm often get an invitation to swell the coffers of Parking Eye.!Said invitations are treated with disdain and declined.I regard Parking Eye et al as a malignant growth on commerce the quicker that they are put out of business the better.I think that most of us would and could stand up for our rights ,but what about the sort of people who have always paid their bills on time and are being intimidated and think that they really have been fined. In Scotland the war has been won so I say GO, CAPTAIN HADDOCK.
I wouldn’t be paying no £85.00 to the like of parking eye either ,just as i refuse point blank to use any of those ATM’s that are run by Cash Zone or other parasites as i will not pay £2 to withdraw money from my bank account, on principle as it’s wrong as that charge isn’t justified either
