Anyone know why they are spending weeks and thousands of getting shot of laybys on the A1 from M18 up o M62?
Upgrading to motorway I think, don’t quote me on that though.

Shows how deluded some folk are at the Highways Agency where he says there are plenty of other places to take free rest periods and names them. The last time I stopped at the mentioned places they certainly were not free when I had to take my 9-11 hours off

Begs the question though; why weren’t the lay-bys upgraded to “current standard” rather than removing them altogether?

Simply because the section of society that benefits most from these laybys (us) are of little relevance to those that sit in offices and plan these things, well, until there’s no shopping on the shelves that is.

There is that
bit ■■■■■■ off about the long one n/b not long before the m62 closing ,always stopped there for a ■■■■ before I headed to the shops in Leeds ,batley etc ,if I didn’t I always seemed to want a leak halfway through tipping .
Same as heading back ,used the one on the hill s/b ,if I didn’t I’d get halway through rubbish at rsu and be crossing my legs .
I guess I could use ferry bridge but it’s heading the wrong way for Leeds etc ,

I agree with the removal of the laybys. The petrol stations should be scrapped and moved to proper off-road locations as well. That stretch is essentially a motorway with green signs & nobody would advocate laybys for general parking being installed on motorways.

Whats the wayfarer cafe like on the n/b side where the petrol station and caravan park at the rear is,its a bit near home for me to go in and never seems alot in,its a death waiting to happen going in and out of the garage i know that…

Honestly, I just think our roads are far too busy & congested in comparison for them sort of parking arrangements on busy routes like the A1. It’s far safer to have all parking in proper off road service areas, well away from the main carriageway.
What’s really needed is that stretch to be converted to a motorway (which I suspect it will be) with new NB & SB service areas built to re-accomodate the current petrol stations. In the meantime, scrapping the laybys & closing off the small sideroads to keep the heavy traffic flowing properly is the right thing to do.

I ended up in the only ■■■■ stained stinking layby that is still open last night after getting stuck on the A1 for 40 minutes and running out of time near Darrington
