Owner drivers, is there any money in it?

albaa:
Lets say your old granny left you 80 grand in her will.
you decide to take the plunge. Be free your own boss. What trusted steed would you buy? Truck and trailer.

Depends entirely on what work you have in mind. I have a 6x2 Renault Magnum because I do 44 tonne work and Renault Magnums are cheap to buy because they don’t have “badge appeal” and a fantastic truck to live in.

If Granny did leave you £80,000 in her will then you would be at a huge advantage from the get-go because interest on finance deals is obscene, and you’d be saving that. I had to borrow some money to part-finance the truck, £15,000, but even over three years that will end up costing me nearly £20,000. It’s the only thing that really ■■■■■■ me off about it.

Yes I loved the magnum. It had to be big it would be euro work in fridges.
I seen the new Renault t in Dublin wonder what the price is

I’ll sum up being an owner driver, for me, as I see it.

On average, I earn little more than an employed driver but I have a lot more freedom. I’m not told when I can and can’t have a day off or a week off, I just let Gregory’s know when I am available, and they give me work to suit.

My earnings are completely random. One week I might make £2,500, the next week I might lose money.

It might not be for everybody but for me, hand on heart, putting my own truck on the road is one of the best things I have ever done in my entire life. Even if the wheels fell off tomorrow, I wouldn’t regret doing it for a New York minute.

Wing and a prayer:
