i dont think it has to being with being scared but more likley to do with makeing sure the OP can walk before he can run. its not trying to put him off but many of the new posters coming here looking for help on starting up have no idea of the costs invloved in being and OD. myself im an employed driver working for a very small company. i have considered it a few times but initial start up cost have put me off but one day i might take the plunge and do it.
the people who post in this foum are mainly OD’s or have been ODs so there input can be helpfull and sometimes very insightful

I can’t help but think that some of the reply’s on here with regards to questions re owner operator is it worth it etc are slightly negative.
Is it because you exsiting boys and girls are scared about the competion which might just prop up.

believe me i was working in cafe for this [zb] of boss i slugged it out for 3 years getting all the info required to run a cafe. Saved all the money and now i got two cafes and my former boss is out of business. my next ambition is to run a truck watch out boys and girls
good, spend three years as an employed driver and you will have some of the skills needed to run your own truck . But don’t just jump in feet first with no experience, that’s a recipe for disaster.
It is a bad idea to be thinking about getting a truck before getting a hgv licence - it’s tough out in the real world, people are out there who will rip you off ! experience matters !!!
All I can add is that I know a dozen or so former owner-drivers who have packed it in over the last year, and I don’t know anyone who has started up.
Unless you have exceptionally good work, you will probably be better off as an employee.
Doing anything for yourself is extremely hard graft you have to work 4 times harder if not more. There are no sickies, no holidays etc etc.
Being your own boss is a load of tosh everybody becomes your boss ie the tax man the vat man etc
The only good thing is if you don’t drop down dead is the prospect of early retirement in the south of spain sipping on a pina colada with all your luxiories paid for.
And of course posting useful info on here to anyone else who thinks about going alone. You need cahonas grandi if you want make something of yourself.
