I went out to one of HMT Shippings trombone trailers a few years ago. Foreign chap had loaded steel out of Lackenby.
Hadn’t put his timbers in quite the right place though.
Result was a beaver-tailed trailer. I went out with more chains and warwicks to secure the load, then escorted him back into the steelworks to get reloaded, properly.
T’arse end of the trailer chassis was well bent!
It’s actually a plant wagon with set of curtains on the top, look at this picture of mine and you’ll see the similarity.

8wheels, how much weight can you carry? We’re looking for an 8x2 beavertail to replace my 6x2, need to carry komatsu us138, which with buckets id say 16Tish but only wagons we can find have cranes fitted which defeats the object. Could get one built, but dont think they will spend mega money. Found 1 or 2 but all same age as ours 53. Cheers
I can carry roughly 16t on mine, which is surprising to say the least.
I carry a hell of a lot of chains and lashing kit, a massive set of heavy chains for lifting, smaller chains for lifting etc etc. I’ve also got a hydraulic 10t winch, and a 23t/m crane on it and the body is made by Andover trailers who cut up old battleships to get the steel
Not that you’d know it to look at them but they are alloy wheels which must help a bit, it’s an 8x2 tag rather than a double drive and the nearside fuel tank was removed when the body went on.
I used to have an 8x4 FM12 with a 10t/m crane and a fold flat Andover body, that one weighed 15.5t
I’d carry a Komatsu 138 and buckets on mine and not be too worried. A lot of people tend to spec these thing with 35t/m cranes but you’ll drop your payload to about 13t.
Cheers for the reply, a crane would be handy as i do end up taking teles with me to load/unload on some sites. Im currently in a 6x2 with andover body which is brill, a tad heavy tho! Weighs in at 12t with chains ratchets and toolbox full of straps.
If we did get a crane it would have to be able to double stack cabins, usually as far away from the truck as possible! Chap who moves them for us now has a 70t mtr and still struggles on some of our sites! Bigger the crane less payload! Id rather stick to him loading both of us and running together.
Mine will lift an empty 20’ shipping container (2.25t) at full reach (8m) with a bit to spare rated for 2.7t @ 8m. You can double stack with it but you’ve got to be next to the bottom one to do it. I previously had a 6x2 with a 19tm and that could also double stack them. No matter what size crane you’ve got it will never be big enough, my FM12 had a sister vehicle with a 39tm on the back, guess what - that couldn’t do some of the jobs asked of it
I only drive it for a week, was glad to hand it back.
