Overhead gantry question

bald bloke:
So how would you interpret this, gantries 1 and 2 say 40mph gantries 3 and 4 are blank/off and the 5th gantry says national speed limit, so does the national speed limit kick in on gantry 3 or is it assumed it’s still 40mph until otherwise stated which in this case is when reaching gantry 5 ?

Once you reach the blank gantry it’s crack on full sped ahead as confirmed by gantry 5

This is why so many people get confused on smart motorways. Blank gantries after a lower speed restriction DOES NOT mean national speed limit has resumed. If the gantry says 40mph all the way across then the next 6 are blank, then the 7th one you pass says national speed limit then really you should have been doing 40mph or less until the national speed is displayed. On the older smart motorways I think the speed cameras are only active on the gantries that actually display the lower limit and not on the blank ones so you will get away with it. However, on the newer bits on the M6 16-19 I’ve seen cameras flash in random locations no where near the gantries so they must have a different system installed.

In the situation the OP described its clearly an error and I’d advise going through at the lowest speed displayed are be prepared to have to have your day in court to fight it if you end up getting flashed and chose to dispute it.

If you got a dash cam and know you can save the footage to prove it then crack on.

I’ve noticed since lockdown the overheads between Nottingham and Sheffield on M1 now flash even when there is nothing illuminated. Get dazzled quite often when I’m trundling along at 56mph, nearly dropped my book! [emoji6]

The one on the M1 northbound on the downhill section just after Tibshelf services is broken. It has even flashed lorries when there’s nothing on the matrix and even fully loaded you’re not getting to 60 by that point.

Given the limit is 70MPH it would come as no surprise that when there’s nothing on the gantry they default to 70MPH and there’s definitely more than a couple of cars who go whizzing down that stretch above that.

I got flashed recently on the bit near woodall servs . Doing 56 In 70 bit so must have been someone in front but they were quite a way ahead?? Definitely wasn’t me our trucks would struggle to do over 60 off the edge of a cliff!

I’ve been flashed loads of times in a truck doing 56mph with no reduced speed limit in place.

They seem to go wrong every so often and the next night theres 3 lanes coned off while they fiddle with it. Same with matrix signs, the number of those which don’t work is shocking considering they are fairly new. Think that’s why they flash everything.

Tibshelf have got that bump just before the services to wake you up so you can’t use the excuse “I was sleeping thus didn’t see the speed camera your honour”.

I do wonder if they can work out the size of the vehicle and flash bigger ones at 65 and smaller ones at 75.

I’m sure that will come.
