OVER FOR ROVER?

SMUDGER:
Maybe we will see Poles doing car transporter work too!! :open_mouth:

They already do. A friend of mine is a security guard at one of the car storage areas near Immingham and although not many yet, they are starting to get some Poles in, much to the dislike of the British guys there.

Qhunter:
The Phoenix directors seem to be being upheld as knights in shining armour through all this when (if last years article in the Torygraph is to be believed) the truth is they’ve stripped cash out of the company as fast as they could.

They are now asking for £100million to bail the company out. This figure is much, much less than the combined annual salary for the board of directors (which IIRC was quoted at £140million). Lets see them putting their hands in their pockets shall we. Whilst we on about money, perhaps they could donate the £13million that was recently transferred into the directors pension fund.

I’m not in the market for an argument but why should the government throw money they haven’t got (there is a fiscal deficit of Ā£35billion annually thanks to the chancellor banking on economic growth that didn’t appear) at a company that has been mis managed.

I’m saddened and very angry to see yet another great British company go down the tubes as a result of mis-management and greed.

not forgetting the £40million puond they gave themselves as a wage increase.pigs in the trough again.

a long slow death … it started in the 70’s and was hastened when Rover did the dirty to the nips…so what did they do… just got government money and backing to extend Swindon to build a press shop and not rely on PSF (leyland owned) BMW sold the profitable car Land Rover to the Yanks and kept the new one Mini mk2 for themselves …that’ll be 6000 less drivers when they pass their hgv test

when we sent the Montego track to India i dont think all of it arrived but hey ho no loss

Im not trying to start an arguement, this is my opinion,Rover has been in trouble for years,if I worked for Rover I would have left years ago,Its been bailed out more times than I care to think,by the government(taxpayers)and whoever else.
up until the last few years they have made crap unreliable cars, that rust away in no time, even now they might look nice but thats about it ,the only good thing about Rover was the old V8 engine(know the car but cant remember model)
All this rubbish that always surfaces about the terrible way British car manufacturing has gone, blah, blah, blah
Shut the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  company down,it will just join the long list of has been British companies,
sad,but ploughing money into a lost cause every couple of years to preserve pride and jobs to me just is’ nt worth it.

cant really argue with that its a shame for the workers though. dont forget the profitable leyland truck and bus company lost millions and their future bailing out the car divisons in the 70`s,money that could have been ploughed back into future models.
the V8 was american design ex BUICK

Don’t worry about Rover, Tony and Gordon have been parachuted in, they’ll save it.
Cynical head on, incredible timing, just before an election.

apart from the loss of jobs, which is sad, the cars are and always have been crap any way. so they obviously couldnt get it right or there would be no problems…

my opinion anyway

Very sad news for the employees there without a doubt, and also those wagon drivers whose main source of income it was.

BUT, on the plus side, they made cars anyway so no real loss and the drivers of the damned things would always be those driving along motorways at 45mph and generally getting under your feet.

I think you’re referring to the P6 and the SD1, and it was actually a Buick engine. Not an Austin-Morris/BMC/BLMC/Rover design.

Nice pic Simon.

ive owned a mini, a montego and a meastro (all rubbish cars, but reliable as any)
but if the government were to buy the company i might be patriotic enough to buy one. i fancy the new v8 zt.
this country needs an industry of some sort.

A mate of mine has one of the MG ZS’s not the 180bhp but the next one down and its actually quite a good car and well specced

Its a pity about rover really as i thought when pheonix took them over and started up with the MG range it would of turned the company round but hey [zb] happens and it looks like there will be 6000 new truck and bus drivers being trained in the midlands shortly as part of the redundancy scheme :unamused:

simon

news flash, rover to ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  prices to get rid of stock.
bargains to be had.

Think it may have been a hamster at some point?

In my opinion the best thing they can do is close the gates and turn the land into a truck park.

The latest owners have managed to blue 500 million in 5 years after buying the remains of a knackered industry for a tenner!

The Chinese pulled out because they found out that the plant was run by communists :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, Leyland, Austin, Morris, MG,Rover have always made crap vehicles, since the old prestige cars like a Rover 90 or maybe a P4 2000 / 3500. The SD1 was a reasonable car to drive but fell to bits withiin a year.

Think of the other crap they have made.
Austin 1100 /1300
Austin / Morris 1800 Landcrab
Maxi
Princess
Allegro (all agro)
Metro

Even the new models were called Sterling because they devalued so quickly.

Its not a sad loss.
