hiya,
Norm, I happen to know exactly which bedroom of my Grandfathers home I arrived in,
but not a clue as to where i was conceived, I did live for most of the war just off the
Strand Road on a street which ran parallel with the Dock Road so you can imagine quite
a few nights were spent in air raid shelters in the Bootle area, so sheltered life it was.
thanks harry, long retired. You could claim to be nearly a Scouser then Harry.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Yes Dennis a semi skilled scouser my late younger sister was born in Bootle so she could
have claimed the “passport” I myself was born on St Georges Quay Lancaster in the house
known as the “crooked house” next door to a pub just before the Maritime museum my
family lived/owned the property up to a few years ago, I think it is now student accomodation.
thanks harry, long retired.

When you told me about where you were born in Lancaster “H” I clocked the house up from the other side of the river, and sure enough there it was and “on the slant” as you described.I’ve been past it hundreds of times over the years !!! I have attempted to start a fund to have a “blue plaque” fixed to the wall (“Harry Gill was born here in 1895”) But when I spent all one Sarurday doing a street collection the sum total I managed was a washer,a Polo Mint,a Toffee wrapper and a Bic pen (dry !).Plus the council threatened me with prosecution for wanton vandalism and defacing a grade 1 listed building if I dared put a plaque up !!!

hiya,
Dennis, if you had added former, but now worn out “wagon driver” to the
card around your neck, assuming you was doing the job properly that is,
you would have found donations came flooding in and there might have been
a bit left over for a jar or two, but Dennis please get the date correct it’s
1936, our lass is capable of putting years on me without you adding to the
misery, a bit more useless information!! my uncle I was named after him he
lost his life in WW1 was born in the same house and 1895 would have been
around his birthdate, more useless information!! did you know anyone who
is privaleged enough to have been born on St Georges Quay is known as a
“slinger”, now it’s time for me to “sling my hook”.
thanks harry long retired.

Pinch his boots,he can’t chase you then.

Harry, June’s issue of Heritage Commercial has an article about Covent Garden, they have a pic of a Bowkers Super Comet (PBV821). Did you know the motor? It has a strange underbumper which doubles as a towbar!! There’s also a shot of a brewers dray threading it’s way through the chaos, probably looking for you.
regards Kev.

hiya,
Remember the motor very well from it being a mainliner the first time i was
at Bowkers to having worked it’s way down to collection and delivery on local
work, that would have been the second time I did a spell there, I have driven
the motor around the doors just picking up bits and bobs to make up the night
trunk loads, it was a better motor than that 80 thing I was lumbered with for
my main drive, there are quite a few pics of the Leyland on the Northwest
Trucks site and if you look through all of Bowkers on there you’ll see my Atki
the old Mk1 with the ■■■■■■■ and my brand new Scania 80 “yuk” coupled to
a step frame tilt prior to me taking it on it’s virgin voyage.
